Not if we have to buy players too
Same problem as before
Up the wages takes away to invest
It’s interesting that Liverpool for example have moved to performance based contacts now as incentives which is exactly what we do
Problem is that we had (and still have) the lowest pro-rata wage bill AND were investing the lowest amount in transfers.

Obviously adding to the wage bill is likely to reduce the transfer pot but to say that we couldn't afford the wages simply isn't true, we could afford them but chose not to take that route.

All clubs have performance based contracts and have done for years.

Clubs are now pushing the extremes of performance contracts
It’s exactly why pool paid out so much more last season in wages
And again the assumption we could pay more is just that, an assumption...
Unless you have secret incite to the clubs finances

I think it should be remembered too that in a lot of the previous windows we had significant financial uncertainty because of the stadium, delay, increased cost.

It's easy enough to just claim that we could or should have spent more, it's somewhat harder running things being responsible if things go terribly wrong.

We pushed the boat out this summer, particularly with Ndombele. We kept the spending going in January at a decent level.

I'm guessing whatever Levy does there will be people claiming that he should just spend a bit more, it's possible.

I think any club that won the CL would see itself have a massive bonus bill.

I heard on a podcast today that at least 5 of the Leipzig starters had been signed for not much money by their scout Paul Mitchell. If only we had someone like him to procure talent on a budget. Oh, wait, we did and he left.

I heard that too. It actually made me realise that if we covet the likes of Upamecano that much, we can EASILY buy the next U21 centre back on the production line. There are 40 of them out there across Europe, we just have to select one and commit to it.

We should have. If it had only been 15 million, not finding it would constitute one of the biggest blunders of all-time. Given that it was closer to 40, I still think we should have. Come on. The fee -given his value- was knock-down. And if we'd paid close to 90 mill for him, I think we might have seen the money coming back as 4th was very very doable this season. It isn't like we didn't know there was an issue!

As for the wages, I think the wider point is if you keep wanting that calibre of player yet keep getting NJie's and NKoudou's, you are going to feel you're not taken seriously after a while, especially when you establish CL football regularly. But yes. We could've paid them.

If Poch was such a great coach, why did he improve so few of the 27 players purchased under him at a NET outlay of £200m over the last four years. That is the big question.

Who’s to say he didnt improve them?

Also didn’t £130 odd million of that net spend come in his final transfer window at the club, with him then not getting a chance to improve those four players (especially with two of the four injured and one on loan at Leeds)?

Again, we've been down this road and I believe I gave a detailed, player any player response as to who he improved. Further, if a player brought in was not his first-choice, how much could you reasonably expect him to improve said-player?

...not to mention one of those players not especially high on his list!!!!!!!!!!! (n.b. I am not sure where he stood on Clark so not about him).

Can we please have one new thread called The Poch Years and in there thfcsteff can have these endless debates about the who, what, why and when things went downhill under the great man.

It just seems to be utterly endless across so many threads.

That being said, its an important discussion so lets have one place for it and leave the other threads to be used for discussions around what those threads are about.

Porch’s time at our club was significant both in terms of length and development of the club. It’s therefore only natural that many threads will have discussions on him. I see no point in isolating that to a single thread and it wouldn’t work anyway.

The problem is imo is that they rarely have any direct relevance to the thread.

Its always indirect led by one person bringing every perceived negative back to the same narrative: poch was mistreated, poch was misled, poch wasnt listened too, poch didnt get the players he wanted, so we ended up with njie and nkoudou etc etc etc.

Its too much in my view and is never-ending.

It needs one place now, a good number of us are getting fed up with finding the same discussion wherever we look!

Isn’t there a thread on Poch in the archive?

As long as that is accessible then that would be the ideal place. Some people still want to discuss it I get that. But rather than drag up the virtually identical debate in various threads every couple of weeks, taking place between thfcsteff and then a different poster each time, take it to the Poch thread I would suggest, thfcsteff puts the same argument we’ve heard a billion times and then discussions can ensue from there.

If it then dies down, thfcsteff can then bump the original post with all the same arguments we have heard a billion times and then a different poster will see it and then they can respond and then the same arguments we have heard a billion times can ensue.

And then when it dies down a couple of weeks later thfcsteff can bump the original post......................

I’m always happy to read thfcsteff’s opinions in any thread, whether I agree or disagree with him.

Keep posting in any thread as you see fit please thfcsteff old chap.

World class trolling DQ. Of course, the fact remains, if Poch was still here we would not be having this discussion...:D
