***OMT: Mighty Spurs vs Manure***

And, as a closing note, Son has well and truly lost it today. No quality on or off the ball, slipped and slid continuously, literally fell over thrice with no real pressure.

Dunno what he's got, but bench him before he costs us worse.

And then laughing with ralf at the end?

There is something about him receiving the ball with his back to goal that isn’t suiting him. Plus conte plays with his ‘automations’, which I think limits hi spontaneity.

Going behind repeatedly isn't great for us when we're so clearly at our best when counter attacking.

Last goal against, not much to do, heart delivery, Doherty does what would usually be enough. First two. We're organised, balanced, all of a sudden we're not. That's rather poor, then Dier backing off Ronaldo for the first one and Reguilon playing onside for the second.

Left ourselves with too much to do, got back twice, but can't just keep giving away stuff like this.
Doherty tried to pick up Ronaldo as he saw Romero had completely lost him.

and i thought we should have done that, let them have the ball, sit back and counter

We tried, I think. But then Dier stood 500 yards off Ronaldo and the inevitable happened, and we had to chase the game pretty much non-stop. They sat back and dared us to break them down, we couldn't.

Decent game, I thought.

  • United sat back and dared us to break them down, we couldn't, and we will not be able to with a midfield as limited as Hojbjerg and Bentancur.
  • Eventually, their superior quality told. Don't kid yourself - they have better players in every single area of the pitch bar striker. Dier, Davies et al, in terms of quality, were always going to be outmatched against players that cost half a billion. Poor management is why they are where they are, not quality.
  • No quick fixes to this side. Mentality poor, quality poor, and we only play one way, counter at speed. Anything else, we struggle.
  • We gave it go, which is all you can expect, as I keep saying. Do not expect this side to show up, to play up to expectations. Those expectations were set when we were good. We are not good now, we are a corpse on life support because we have one of the game's best managers.
Write this season off, your mental health will be better for it and what happens in the summer, happens. In the longer term..well, you know my views. Nothing changes until ENIC leave, and this script has been on repeat for 20 years now.

More important things going on in the world right now anyway, which have kept me occupied for the last few weeks. So take a break, lads.

Great post, this season was done when we exited the FA cup and way before in the league.

we are settling into a new system so when (we hope anyway) better players come in the consistancy will improve

Garbage Re Bentancur, he made some mistakes today but going sideways or backwards wasn't one of them.

It really was. Re-watch it or seek out a passing map. He made very few forward passes. I was watching him specifically because of what Sherwood said during the week and was sure I'd be calling Sherwood a clueless roosterwomble. But most of the time he got it, he went backwards or sideways and when he went forward, it was barely forward or ridiculously overhit like the one for Davies (who didn't make the run but he'd have had to be Superman to get it).

Re-watch the game. It was Winks-esque.

I'm a fan of Bentancur and he's new to the league so gets some leeway. But he was very, very poor today.

He has followed the pattern that players at lots of different clubs in their late 20s have after signing their last big contract.

Totally agree about writing this season off. The key is levy making conte happy with his summer presents. Next season we can stress about what happens.

Which won't happen, mate. Honestly, telling you now, Levy will do absolutely nothing, so just let it go.
  1. Kane will leave.
  2. Conte will leave with Kane.
  3. Levy will likely get Poch in to assuage the worst of the fan anger.
  4. Alasdair Gold or some other club mouthpiece will gurn about how Kane and Conte leaving is actually a sign of ambition from the club, as is spending nothing.
  5. We go on in this merry go round forever and ever, year after year, under ENIC.
It's coming, mate, so I'm just saying, disconnect now to save yourself the pain. If by some miracle Conte and Kane are convinced to stay and by some other miracle Levy or Lewis hit their head and sell Spurs while in a state of confusion so we actually spend money, we can resume anticipating things next fall. ;)

From this performance - we need another CB, and Romero to develop his marking. For a CB he rarely dominates in the air. He's not the tallest but what he has to do is stay with his man on set pieces. 101 stuff.

Reggie is a 90% player. Almost excellent. Can Conte draw more from him? I think he can. First game back so have cut him some slack, but the issues I have with him are he's not amazing defensively, and he flatters to deceive in attack too. He IS almost there though. Needs cool to make passes stick when attacking or collect a cross. He's getting in the right positions. His sloppy pass in attack that found Pogba proceeded his - millisecond slow- offside foot.

The first goal - Bentancur is too slow closing down the man and he's taken out the game by a deft pass. He doesn't stop the pass or mark Ronaldo. He started the game a beat off the pace. In those situations, better for Bentancur to stay on Ronaldo and let Davies step out of defense. In fact we need that so we are not overrun in the middle. Bentancur wasn't terrible, but Pogba won the battle, and we needed more from the Argie. He is our most skillful midfielder, and if he's not playing well we feel it. We need to sign another midfielder.

Then in attack, Son and Kane looked a little weary. We need another striker. If we can somehow keep Kane and sign 3 key players - a dominating CB, a skillful midfielder, and a forward with goals in them - plus develop the likes of Romero, we have something to look forward to next season. Lots of 'ifs' there. But there were positive signs in how Conte had us playing today.

I didn't think we played that badly tbh. Unlike the other recent losses were we looked dreadful. It just seemed like United scoring first always meant we had to work to get an equaliser and once we did we foolishly conceded again. We never really got hold of the match on equal footing sadly. But not a terrible performance other maybe the defensive side being far to easy to penetrate. Ronaldo didn't score from half chances, he got clear golden opportunities. We need to work on that.

Reggie is average at everything IMO
I say that as someone who likes him
He rarely if ever hits anything first time which hurts some momentum and he also makes odd defensive calls
