**Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

we may have better players on paper but they have a more settled and balanced team, imv - which counts for a lot.

i think last season, as a team, we were better than them as we had Modric, Rafa, a happy and in form Adebayor, Bale & Lennon - this season although we have added some quality we have also lost some important cogs and changed manager so there is some disruption and we are no longer the balanced settled team we were. potentially though i feel we are building a side which will be better (overall over the course of a season) than what we had last year - i just hope that Arsenal and Wenger do not improve at the same rate as us (or higher)

i certainly had us down to finish below Arsenal this season, last summer

Last season they had the best player in the league and that helped them a lot!

Fair enough. He's got the backing of Sir Bobby Robson and The Special One.

I think they know more about managing then you do or i do, so i'll stick to my guns on this one.

That is such a lame argument, especially as a lot of ex professionals disagree with each other on important footballing topics. If one disagrees with you, then that completely invalidates your opinions? Man, it's time for me to go to bed rather than try and debate that logic

Not really, two of the better managers around that know the manager very well.

Which you are comparing to ex-professionals that watch matches and disagree.

Both Bobby Robson and Mourinho have had the pleasure of working with AVB. It's like if Gary Neville starts talking about United player he's played with, i'll pay more attention because he actually knows them.

yes definitely - id wager if he was there this season they'd be way out of our reach as the team as a whole is better than last year.

I don't think so. I think we are better than last year too. Better keeper, better defence, stronger central midfield and Bale has been on fire and a better forward than what we had last year. But if they had Van Persie then sure they may be out of sight, because he is the best player in the Premiership right now.

But for me Wenger is better than Redknapp and better than AVB and that is also a main reason as to why we will struggle to beat them in the league. Hopefully he will leave Arsenal soon and their time of domination over us will come to an end!

Soooooo bias doesn't come into it? And believe me, you may be right about Robson but I have had the pleasure of meeting the special one on a few occasions and what he says publically about AVB may not mirror what he really thinks!

i disagree entirely with the idea that we are a better team than last season.

we have improved, on paper, some key positions but in terms of being a balanced side with quality over every position? no, not yet - last season was a much better team for us

Bias may come into it, but you're also more likely to get a better understanding from them.

You don't believe what Mourinho says on the one hand, yet do on the other? That's somewhat contradictory.

Hey I don't believe what most people say to journalists! I am close friends to a few famous Dutch players and when I see them being interviewed the words coming out of their mouth usually aren't what they really believe

Then i feel bad for you, having friends that feel they need to hide what they truly feel. :p

I am not a massive fan of the Portuguese league. Too one sided. Porto win almost all the time, it's boring.

Except that when AVB took over Porto, they had just finished 3rd, on 68 points, behind Benfica (76 pts) and Braga.

To turn that around to such an extent that Porto finished 1st, on 84 points - 21 points ahead of 2nd placed Benfica - is truly remarkable.

Ah, right....

But you're not going to give AVB any credit for that improvement? Mmmmmkay.

I get the impression that Bale himself feels rather differently on the matter. It's perfectly apparent that he's very happy with what AVB has done for him.

Cheeky fudge.

Hahahaha, I bet opposition managers tell their players to wind Wheelchair up every time, and he always falls for it. I need to see the Rafa nutmeg again.

The Football Association will take no action over an incident involving Arsenal's Jack Wheelchair and Everton's Kevin Mirallas during Tuesday's goalless draw.

Mirallas, 25, appeared to squirt water at Wheelchair as the players made their way to the tunnel at half-time.

Midfielder Wheelchair, 21, reacted angrily and Everton players stepped in to prevent a confrontation.

However, officials did not feel the incident warranted further action.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger played down the incident in his post-match news conference on Tuesday.

He said: "I don't know about it, but if it was [on television], then very soon everybody will know about it - and I will know about it as well.

"It was all right in the dressing room."

I think we are a weaker team overall, a better goalkeeper, and a more reliable centre back in Jan but someone that is still prone to errors than King would not have made in the first half of the season last year. But then his form dipped so Jan overall is better. Plus Kaboul has been out, he may well have played over Gallas, Dawson and Caulker more often. Young players will likely have a difficult second season after a breakthrough first and this has happened with Walker, so overall we may have improved one position in defence and have a better goalkeeper but it's not that much better.

In midfield, Dembele isn't to Modric's level yet. Lennon has been better as has Bale, although he's been moved upfront and Sig, while I really rate him, isn't as good as Bale on the left, but then very few people are.

So because Bale has been moved upfront, we can say we are stronger there but Ade has been nowhere near as good, Defoe was badly out of form after a good start and Bale only started playing there in the last couple of months so over the season we have been weaker overall upfront, and it's pretty outstanding that we've managed to get where we are having to rely on Defoe as a lone striker for large parts of the season, as I don't think Harry would have managed that. In behind, Dempsey, while a decent option has been dissapearing in a lot of games and is not on VDV's level.

So overall, considering King was playing regularly for the first half of last season and playing well, while JV is more reliable as regards to injuries, we have only marginally improved that position, while Walker has been weaker and Benny hasn't been as good, probably because he isn't suited to AVB's style of play. We've had to move JV to left back and play Caulker more often so we've only really improved the goalkeeper there to a significant standard, while losing out on the other positions. In midfield, it's essentially a swap of Dembele for Modric who isn't on the level Modric was, and if we say Bale and Lennon have been better, Bale's gains in the forward position have been marginal because it hasn't been all season, and we've had to play Dempsey and Sig, who aren't as good as Bale on the left or Rafa in behind. Ade is weaker, although Defoe has improved his all round game.

We aren't a better team than last year, and Arsenal have good depth now even though they lost RVP. Their bench last night was pretty decent unfortunately.
