What a fcukin' joke those outdoor games have been in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. A totally mismanaged attempt at the shallowest form of marketing. We're sick of this phoney Beatlemania. Stick to what works in the places that let it work. FFS.
All the fault of NHL Commissioner Gary 'Bobblehead' Bettman. He's obsessed with trying to force-feed ice hockey into sun belt markets like Arizona and Florida where there is very little natural interest. And, clearly, very little in the way of natural elements to support outdoor NHL hockey.
The NHL was smart to grant Seattle a franchise where the Thunderbirds - "DAAA Birrds!" - junior hockey club has done very well over past decades. Loved covering games there. A highlight was being stuck in mid-afternoon traffic and hearing on the car radio the debut playing of Nirvana's Nevermind album. The new NHL Kraken franchise is being capably overseen by the very talented and experienced Tim Leiweke. They will be a great success.
But the whole Arizona experiment has been a colossal failure and the present ownership group are setting new, low standards for fiscal mismanagement, sponsor relations and employee morale. An unnamed third party - widely suspected to be the NHL - has hired a Chicago law firm to investigate the many, many claims of managerial misdeeds, including sexual harassment of female employees by the owner's son.
Add in the schittshow that is the Florida Panthers - who basically play in a soulless near-empty rink in a suburban Miami parking lot - and it's clear the NHL's efforts to force feed Canada's game to American sunbelt markets has reached its saturation point. They've done very well in Tampa Bay, Las Vegas and Dallas, less so in Raleigh, North Carolina. And been a dismal failure in Atlanta.
Not sure that Nashville, Tennessee is classed as a sunbelt town, but the NHL there is an absolute roaring success. Maybe one of the top 2 or 3 venues to see a game live. Great gameday atmosphere to watch the Predators play.
Time to move the Panthers north to Quebec City where a new, state-a-de-art 18,000-seat arena awaits in a fabulous city where NHL hockey once thrived and is ready to resume its NHL role. And shift the Arizona failure to the massive market of Houston where money and a suitably located arena await.
Other than that, Go Leafs Go.
