I think Defoe did excellent today but lets not get ahead, but see if he can keep this up. Did well for his goals, and full credit for it. Even if he choses to be selfish, we should give every goal scorer that right. But I still cringe when i see his shots go off target, and it becomes obvious to me that a better striker would thrive in his position, especially with a very attack minded team set like ours.
In short Defoe is good, can be very good at times, but we need a very good striker available all the time if we want to start thinking about challenging for the top honours.
But this Reading game belong to Defoe, and rightfully so. Hoping to see more insipiring performances like this.

The age old argument of how good is Defoe?
For me top drawer really is, underated as a footballer too
Absolute goal machine no two questions and like I have said many a time, if Defoe was Spanish or Brazilian and playing abroad with the same goal he would be on all the Glory Glory Polls as "Who would you want to sign in the summer"

I couldn't agree more.
Defoe has now scored 115 Premier League goals, ranking him in 14th place for the all-time highest goalscorers.
With a bit of luck, he should be comfortably inside the Top 10 by the end of this season.

Yes.
Walcott has 28 England caps (19 starts, 9 as used sub), played a total of 1,424 minutes and scored just 4 goals (3 away to Croatia, September 2008 and a goal against Sweden, June 2012).

Jermain Defoe pinpointed the team’s movement as key to our fine 3-1 victory over Reading on Sunday.
The striker led the way with two goals as we secured our first victory of the campaign in convincing style at the Madejski Stadium.
‘JD’ made it three goals for the season with a strike in each half with Gareth Bale’s first this term sandwiched between. Reading scored a consolation in the last minute.
“It was important to get a win,” said Jermain.
“I thought we deserved it. It was a great performance, everyone worked hard, we created a lot of chances and it could have been more, but we’re delighted to take the three points.
“I thought the movement was the key. Everyone was moving, we kept possession, everyone worked hard around the ball and the quality was there.
“This could now kick-start our season.”

Defoe's been on fire for almost a year. Half that time Harry had him on the bench though, persisting with Saha, which made no sense and might have cost us the CL.

We're really overreacting to his performance yesterday people. He was great yesterday but his performances against brick opposition has never been in question. As a lone striker he's simply not going to perform consistently imo and he hasn't got the all around attributes to play that role. have you forgotten his shower of brick performances vs WBA and norwich?
One other thing i've noticed though is AVBs formation looks like it will work better away from home than at the lane. Against Saudi Sportswashing Machine and reading we had no problems creating chances and that has a lot to do with our movement and our somewhat rigid formation. Defoe will probably get a lot of away goals this season.

I was thinking about yesterday and it is evident that AVB has clearly worked on working with Defoe and being more precise in the box. How often did we see players just whip balls in not caring if it was Defoe or Ade in the box? It looked great for sure, but there was no accuracy. Yesterday, how often did we see the lads look up and pick out a player.
1) the goal. Lennon pulls it back for Defoe, who just stepped off his markers. Remember he and Kanoute used to have this understanding.
2) Defoe pull back to Sig when dispossessing the keeper.
3) Walker's pull back for Bale's goal.
4) Townsends pull back for Defoe when he volleyed over.
It's clear to me it's something that's been worked on. We had numbers in the box at times, and were more selective with who we picked out. This is how we will make more of Defoe and how he can benefit us more.

Yeah, it's a part of trying to lower the reliance no crosses I'm guessing. Instead of just hit and hoping a cross into the box the players were more patient and looked to play until they got into better crossing or passing positions like the ones you mention above.

I mentioned similar in the tactics thread. AVB has clearly been drilling them on cutting back and Siggy and Bale seem to be the men popping up on the edge of the area if Defoe is already forward... It'll be nice to see one go in that doesn't involve a shin though

JD has put up with a lot of benchwarming and uncertainty, even after we brought him back from Pompey.
Def one of my favourites, both for his goalscoring, but also for his willingness to dig in and fight for his place.
He has his flaws but if he puts 1-3 in the net, all is forgotten...unless we lose

This as well.
Had Defoe had more minutes on the pitch last year, IMO we would now be in the CL. He was our most productive player in terms of assists and goals, yet he played only a bit part.
Not putting him on against Villa was criminal. Harry deserved the sack just for that.

The thing I got from him, and especially yesterday is that he has worked on his movement a hell of a lot. I think the whole team has. Sometimes I see us standing still, but yesterday (It wasnt perfect but much better) we nearly always had someone available to play the ball too. Defoe especially.
