O/T Olympic Football 2012

Damiao has always been overrated on here. A few people over hyped him and everyone else jumped on the band wagon regardless of if they had actually seen him play or not.

To be fair - at any given time just about any given footballer could be considered overrated bar Ledley King so I wouldn't read too much into that

Every other poster has him on their "should sign" list - I bet hardly any have seen more than a 5 minute youtube clip.

As the old saying goes - if it was Leonard from Leyton Orient the hype just wouldnt be there...

To go against the grain a bit, I thought Damiao showed some decent stuff against England.

He always looked strong and quite athletic, but for me at least you never quite knew if that was because the defenders in Brazil were a bit weak. He showed against England that he would be a real physical presence in the Premiership as well.

That physical ability combined with neat technique, a good strike and seemingly good finishing does make him an exciting prospect in my opinion.

If "Leonard from Orient" was Brazilian and regularly in the Brazil squad I think there would be a bit of hype actually!

Has been quite a bit of talk of Rhodes moving to the Premiership for solid money, Sunderland paid around 8 million for Wickham if my memory serves me. Neither has had even a call up to the (compared to Brazil clearly inferior) England squad. Butland looks quite the talent, but he hasn't even played a full Championship season and people are talking of probably a £7-8m fee for him. (That's ignoring the examples of Carroll and Henderson as they aren't needed and just a bit unrealistic).

Leonard from Leyton Orient hasn't played for Brazil though has he?

That's where the majority of anyone who has seen him play is, I doubt we've got too many who watch the Brazilian leagues but it's a lot easier to find Brazil playing on the tv. He's played 9 times for them.

He's on my should sign list at the right price, because I have seen him play for Brazil on a few occasions where he has done well, and a few pre season tournaments where he has also done well. At 22, there's a lot of time for him to improve as a player, he's an exciting prospect no doubt about it, but of course, would only be viable at the right place, I wouldn't want to see us spend more than 14/15m on such a player, and even then obviously it is a risky transfer.

I havent seen him, hence would never suggest we buy him.

As you point out - 9 games for Brazil, what are the chances more than a handful of people have seen more than a passing glance at him?

Dont knock the gazette!

My point being a simple one, people readily advocate us spending big money (record breaking) for a lad from brazil (who rarely hit the ground running over here) having seen nothing or very little of him. Based on what exactly?

At least our record with Brasiian players has improved. Gilberto and the great Defendi set a standard that was hard to match. Gomes had his moments, but finally with Sandro we seem to have a quality player. However, given the history of Brasilian players failing to adjust in Europe (remember Denilson) I'd be very worried if we started breaking our transfer record for these young Brasilian players. Chelsea can afford to gamble £25m on Oscar, we have to be more prudent.

That Brazil produces footballers who are quite good whereas England produces footballers who are pants?

#-o plucking numbers out the sky and hope that someone bites on the nonsense hype.

Neymar deserves to be sold for a high fee because he has scaled every mountain in the South American football. Scored brick loads of goals, he's won player of the year, won the Brazilian league and the Copa Libertadore (The South American equivalent of the CL) and been player of the competition in that tournament. Moura is just all hype at this point, albeit Brazilian hype.

I'm not sure I understand. brick loads of people watch Brazil play, they are renowned for being rather good at football.

Oscar has had a Chelsea medical but not signed yet and will decide after the Olympics. That's a bit weird, isn't it?

It is very weird. They'll probably have to do another one if he picks up a knock..

Though if it's with that Chelsea physio, i'd get as many 'medicals' as i could.
