Nuno Espírito Santo - Sacked

You should have mentioned that already ;)
Can’t mention it enough
I even heard the view from the lane sag thag after Pochs great start…. I was like am I the only one who remembers those games
TBF they do talk about his record in derbies that season which was good
We did win half the league games in the end and I think we lost 12 or 13 games

We controlled lots of the game but it was laboured. There are some basic fixes.

In "slow" build up:
  • full backs must stay out on the touchline
  • when they get it, whip it in first time hard and low
  • need aggressive darting runs at angles, don't stand and watch
  • need quick passes to feet, not chest height chips
  • NEVER loft a slow ball into the centre of 3 giants, we won't win it
In fast transition play:
  • pick the correct 2 quick passes and we score
  • NEVER dribble, make a quick pass
It's not rocket science. I'm not sure our training helps, those 6 a side games where players seem to score every 20 seconds, that is nothing like what they have to do in a real match.

After the game Declan Rice said they wanted to get up in our faces but they couldn't because we kept the ball so well and had lots of good movement so they couldn't close us down. I'm not sure I agree, but hey he was playing in the game!

To be honest I have no faith in nuno, reason being from what I saw at wolves and what I'm currently seeing at spurs.

I dont really blame him as much as I blame out board ... same scenario for our transfer policy as it was with our selection of manager ... some quality available but opted for bang average... no good coming out with stupid empty statements about vision, DNA etc it means absolutely dog brick.

Levy and Co are masters of spin and I can't believe anyone believes anything that comes out of his mouth.

Nuno was never the man for job and never will be. We got a few transitional seasons in us before we get Europa league ladies and gents.

There'd be signs by now. There was with Poch. There was with Burkinshaw.

Nothing in his track record or personality suggests he's got anything special. He's a jobbing also-ran who has just been bunged lots of Mendes players through his career
Oh please, let’s not re write history. Pochs first 9 league games he won 3,lost 4 and drew 2. That included drawing to Sunderland, losing to West Brom, getting thumped 4-1 by Emirates Marketing Project and losing at home to Saudi Sportswashing Machine.

This constant comparison to other managers is pointless. Every manager needs time - Poch did, Pep did, Klopp did, and guess what so does does Nuno. He’s here and he’s not been a disaster so let’s at least give him that…..

Thing is even in the early days of the managers above you could see there was a change in style. A new managers influence on the way the sides were going to play. A transition to new ideas.

I’m not seeing it with Nuno. Still looks similar to Jose tenure. No patterns of play , Slow dithering tempo on the ball , little to no movement off the ball.
The lack of energy shown by the team as well it all looks the same as before.

You can forgive the odd bad result in the hunt for progress and change. We are losing and playing poorly.Villa we won but weren’t very good. Saudi Sportswashing Machine were abysmal and made us look better than we are.

Personally ive seen us look much more solid defensively than we have done for some time. Also I’ve seen green shoots since Nuno changed formation and the football is beginning to improve. Did you see Declan Rice say how they wanted to get in our faces but found it hard because the movement was really good? If anyone is going to know it’s the players….

I don’t think you could with Poch, it was largely the same as what we’d seen under Sherwood to start with, the real change came when he started bringing the younger players in the league games regularly.

The last manager I can remember who had mixed early results but clearly had a new system which would obviously work in time was AVB.

Thing is West Ham looked leggy to me. Most West Ham fans thought they themselves were poor on the day.

I would agree we do look more solid. No doubt about that. My concern is the transition to attack it’s poor. Slow and too many touches. I don’t see green shoots myself.

I agree with your concerns and with @Gutter Boy 's comments, and if I had to bet, I'd suggest that doesnt survive this season or til the end of 2022. However binning him now when there isnt an obviously better and available manager seems daft. He's made the change from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1, which has improved things a little, though we're still desperately slow and devoid of attacking threat. We also need 1-2 more windows to ship out say 3-5 players and bring in replacements

I think if we binned nuno now, we'd look like an even bigger joke of a club whereas next summer, if we can get our transfer activity right, we might look like an attractive proposition and more managers might be available (compared to very few now). There's also the chance that Nuno does succeed, in spite of the expectations of a number of us

I'm braced for an up and down season, finishing 6th-9th with limited achieved. At the moment, the transfer windows are more important for us than results on the pitch I'm afraid

They were leggy
Hence why they just sat in deep
We always struggle against that low block even under Poch don’t forget
And West Ham are super organised
Part of our issue is that with Kane and Moura losing the ball so easily the ball just bounces back into midfield and their set deeper and deeper to defend

Some of the problems he has brought on himself, players out of position for instance, but he must also be scratching his head and wondering why we can be so 1, so bad and 2, so passive on the pitch.
We are better than we have shown ourselves to be over the last three seasons.
We have dipped from the over performance of the peak of poch and his team, but not as far as some of these displays would have you think.
We are underperforming.

Can’t comment on Burkinshaw but the signs with Poch were that the players didn’t get his plan to start with and that was after a full pre season which Nuno hasn’t had
I mean we got spanked by city and pool, lost to Saudi Sportswashing Machine in a convincing defeat IIRC and also lost to West Brom who were both poor sides. That was in his first 10 games

Yes Kane was dreadful and does not help with such a lazy performance. Moura is Moura . We all know what we get. We need to move the ball quicker. Start there and we should improve. Our players want to many touches all the time.

Think that sums it up quite well. We are a mid table side.

I’m not suggesting we bin him as we would be an embarrassment so stuck with him. Let’s hope it somehow improves.

I wouldn't bin him now for another caretaker till the summer. But I'd bin him if a proper long-term solution (especially Gallardo) becomes available in the next few weeks/months

I'm not a big fan of formations as in positions vs areas of responsibility, but in my book a 4-2-3-1 is best as a cover for turnovers due to the front 3 being relieved to commit offensively and support the 1. I see especially this formation more as a system than "you play there and you play there", and a system needs a plan and specific roles. We are devoid of this, and haven't really had it since the man who brought it here made it work. At the moment, we have a 1 who rarely is a 1, and we have a 3 which doesn't really create much. Moura is splendid to watch when things go right for him, but against Wham he was back to the old "one dribble too many", not helped by the near-fact that this formation needs movement and unselfishness. Both of which we lacked dearly. It will not work without players making space for others, and without a man running point but against the poorest of teams. This is neither Ndombele or Lo Celso as far as I've seen, and I personally struggle to see a natural position for either of them in a 4-2-3-1, based on characteristics rather that just being good footballers. Harry Winks is a good footballer.

It does look better defensively though, but that and the odd supergoal can't really mask that this setup isn't going to give you a top 4 without the right players. They don't even need to be so-called world class, but they need to be suited.

We have a front man running wherever he likes, that can't be a good thing.
Its disruptive and his team mates are hanging onto the ball wondering where he is and where he is going.
We don't seem to have any patterns for offensive play, and haven't had for quite some time.

As much as I do not have faith in Nuno, the main person to blame is the DoF for appointing him in the first place. There were definitely more attacking managers available in the summer.

Nuno learnt a lot of his managerial skills from Jose so I am not surprised with what he is delivering. He is conservative and risk adverse.

At least he does not throw his players under the bus and he comes across as a thoroughly decent man.
