This is from Bergkamp's recent book. He's comparing Van Gaal's management style to Cruyff's and Wenger's.
Van Gaal was the guy at Ajax who decided to move Bergkamp from being a right winger to a number 10 / shadow striker.

Tug of war! Sherwood fighting Van Gaal for Spurs hot-seat (and the Dutch legend has admitted his desire to manage in England)

By NEIL ASHTON

Legendary Dutch coach Louis van Gaal has put himself in the frame for the Tottenham job by admitting he is ready to manage in the Barclays Premier League.

Van Gaal is currently in charge of the Holland national team and will be available full-time after next summer’s World Cup.

Tim Sherwood, who is interim manager, wants the job full-time and Levy is also expected to interview former Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle.

But Van Gaal’s glittering CV - which includes league titles with Ajax, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and AZ Alkmaar - has seduced Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Dutch national television NOS knocked on van Gaal’s door at his home in Noordwijk on Sunday after reports that Levy met the fabled coach for talks.

Van Gaal said: ‘I’ll never comment on offers. I’ve always said I want to work in the Premier League once, so there’s a chance.

‘There are times a deal is announced and there are times it’s in preparations.

‘Everyone who knows me knows I won’t do a job share.’

Tottenham’s interim manager Tim Sherwood pressed his claims for the job on Sunday with a 3-2 victory at Southampton in his first Premier League game in charge.

But Levy is wasting no time putting plans in place for his next manager and remarkably Hoddle is expected to meet the chairman before Christmas.

Hoddle was sacked by Levy in September 2003 after a disastrous home defeat to Southampton, but he claims he is ready to steady the ship.

Van Gaal’s allure has put him in the frame and he is one of the most successful managers in the history of the game.

Levy initially wanted Van Gaal, who is quitting Holland after next summer’s World Cup, as an interim manager until the end of the season.

But the Dutch football association - KNVB - will not allow Van Gaal to work in a dual role ahead of the most important tournament in world football.

Van Gaal, 62, is being replaced by Guus Hiddink next summer, but he does not want to leave his role early.

His last club job was with Bayern Munich and he was beaten in the Champions League final by Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan side in 2010 at the Bernabeu.

Mourinho worked under Van Gaal during the Dutchman’s spell in charge at Barcelona and is always incredibly respectful of his achievements in the game.

Van Gaal is due in the country next month to to give a speech in Mourinho’s honour when he is recognised by the Football Writers’ Association.

(Unusually) worth listening to as Ashton and Sherwood are mates.

I would still take Moyes in a heartbeat.

Why? Martinez has shown him up at Everton, AVB who got fired had us above him (with him having the champions of England)

Moyes is desperately overated, had stability, his own squad and still had a dire record against top teams and his rivals (even when they fell from top), Moyes teams choke every time it matters, every significant cup game, every time it is for that last push = choke

And his teams play ugly, fouling, disruptive football.

So Van Gaal is is the inflexible type of manager who sticks to his system no matter what and struggles to handle big egos?

Doesn't sound like what we need to be honest.

I have never been a fan of coaches/managers who can't adjust their system, or only have one set way of playing anyway.

I just have no faith in any outside manager coming in and doing well. Santini was highly rated, he sucked, Ramos was highly rated, he sucked, AVB was highly rated, he sucked. I think managing for Spurs is a difficult job, primarily because Daniel Levy is a difficult person to work for. Tim knows Daniel Levy, Tim knows the club, Tim knows the players, I think those are pretty important variables, he's already shown in one game that he's got balls and is willing to trust youth players. I feel that football managers are generally overrated by fans, they don't know a whole lot more than you or I, it's the coaches behind the scenes who do the important work. Pick the right team, make the right subs, it's not quantum physics like AVB would have us believe.

Thing is Sherwood doesn't know the players. He admitted he knows nothing about Capoue so it's a fair assumption he knows nothing about the other new signings which equals 7 members of the first team squad.

Most of our squad is very young and susceptible to a Van Gaal type management though. And it would appeal to Levy not having to rely on big name players with huge wages, instead doing the job with younger players. I;ve never been a huge Van Gaal fan but he could be the right guy for the job. Its all about the right fit for the club not the best manager.

Van Gaal is an avid promoter of attacking football, educated in the best traditions of the Total Football by Ajax and the Dutch national team of the 1970s. As a coach he is known as a slow starter who frequently finds his players needing ample time to grasp his tactics and intent of play. Generally his teams gather results in the second or third season under his coaching, an exception being the 2009–10 season when he grasped the German Bundesliga title and lost the UEFA Champions League final with FC Bayern Munich. During several periods in his career, Van Gaal has had his troubles with the media. He is known to be very blunt with media representatives he perceives to be asking him 'stupid' questions.

From Wiki so may not be reliable but suggests he needs 2/3 years to get a team going. Hope Levy doesn't mind.

Would be a fantastic appointment, proven pedigree in different countries and has worked with lots of big names before.

Offer me Louis van Gaal any time in the last 20 years and I'd have snapped your hand off. Now? Ooof, I'm really not sure.

But really, the debate is a bit wrong-headed, because what can happen now anyway? Nothing really. LvG is out till the summer, and if we're waiting till then surely we'll also want to consider other potential candidates at that time, like de Boer and newly available WC managers. Why commit now, on paper or otherwise, and lose out on a wider selection? And at the same time severely undermine whoever our interim is? That would be spectacularly awful and dumb thing to do for over half a season.

No, what Levy will do is offer Sherwood interim until the end of the season with the promise that he'll be given genuine consideration by the board along with other candidates in the summer. Sweeten that offer with the entirely plausible line: "Believe me Tim, I'd like nothing more than a home-grown manager and be done with these flakey Eurotrash types. Missing 4th is not a deal-breaker in the circumstances." That would be both plausible to Sherwood's ears and, heaven help us, probably true also. Levy will not sign a pre-contract agreement with LvG, and LvG will not ditch Holland now anyway.

I think that's what'll happen.

I would love to have Van Gaal. Hope we can get a contract sorted for him to take over after the world cup, get Hoddle in till the end of the season if Sherwood doesn't fancy being an interm.

No thanks on Van Gaal. No thanks on anyone Dutch to be honest. I just think the typical Dutch personality doesn't rub well with Levy's oligarchical style.

Sherwood has been around a while. Levy & Sherwood respect each other. Sherwood has a forest named after him. That tick's all 3 boxes for me.

you said this before and i thought it was wrong last season and you are wrong about that for his team this year again IMO

it is interesting though AVB did infact have us above united with some really bad stale stagnant stuff unimaginative stuff but one has to ask if infact thats the way to actually win things in this league?

i think as a FIRST STEP it definately is but then if its a long project there is no telling when the final boot was going to land. we could have been waiting for the final piece of AVB's philosophy , which wasnt working btw, for years

but anyway...i too would take Moyes

anyone of moyes, spalletti or Favre if Vn gaal is as much a nutter as Danners9 says then definately no, but i grew up worshipping the guy

....the only thing is that i have only really got any idea on a personal first hand level though reading about spalletti and favre and from that i dont mind what i read

favre seems like a good option, a very good one infact

Are you joking?! So yo're going to forget about what Moyes achieved in his ten years at Everton, because Everton are playing some nice football and are currently in the top 4 he's shown up Moyes....don't make me laugh! Lets see where they are at the end, they haven't got the depth of any of the top teams and Moyes consistently had them challenging the top 4 spots.

This thing about Moyes playing ugly football is really a bit of a myth too. They played some great stuff at times, but also knew when and how to mix it up......
