New TV and Soundbar

Hijack time.

Anyone got one of those frame TVs?

We use a projector for watching anything that needs to be in good quality, so the TV just needs to be as unobtrusive as possible. Saw one of them in Selfridge's recently and it looked like it would blend in with much of what we already have on the wall.

Anyone able to recommend them or tell me to steer clear?

Better bet for you would be the TV behind a mirror.
Check out your natty togs while the TV is off.

Interesting.

I like the fact that I could build one of those myself, bit I'm not sure any mirror would fit that room - everything else is quite matte

I don't have it myself, but Samsungs look the business. I have a two year old Samsung series 9, and it barely has any frame around it, and including the wall mount it sticks out about 6 cm from the wall, and I have a wall mount with tilt, that builds slightly more than a static one.

Right, What's the latest and greatest? I need to get a new TV. What are the 'must have' things to look for in a TV nowadays? I have a large blank wall in our front room and free reign to do as I please (as much as you can when married!). Need a large TV (Wall-mounted) and storage below. Where's a good site for TV reviews or deals?

It all depends on various things but mainly what will you be using it for e.g. gaming and tv or just tv and what is your viewing angle like etc.

I didn't want to risk screen burn from an OLED and also didn't have the funds available so I got a Samsung QLED which is somewhere between an LED and OLED (basically Samsungs version of an OLED as they don't use that technology).

Screen picture is far brighter than an OLED but the viewing angle is worse if sitting at the side.

Best site I found for reviews and guides is https://www.avforums.com/categories/tv-forums.297/ but some posts are a bit geeky.

Also I found that most TVs are released around March/April so if you can wait till new year or even a couple of months then you'll end up savin quite a bit. Oh and I went for a 55 inch and everyday I regret not getting the 65 inch one, seems huge when it arrives but you soon adjust.

Finally keep an eye on or subscribe to Hot UK Deals, people post loads of great deals so if you can narrow it down to a brand or model you can find the relevant area and wait for a great deal. Here's the QLED deals for example - https://www.hotukdeals.com/tag/samsung-qled-tv

I just got a cheap bracket off Amazon () but one that just tilts would be fine, I've never ever used the extending arm.

If it helps I got the Samsung QE55Q70R but the higher range ones have more dimming zones and a one connect cable which I wish I'd gone for.

Cheers for the reply. Been reading back on this thread and also reading up a bit. Will probably have some further questions soon!

Edit: Next question, Whats the benefit of an Android TV? I mean as opposed to any other Smart TV.

I wouldn't get an Android TV personally or worry about the smart features. Get a firestick or if you can afford it get an Nvidia shield. I got the old man a decent Android TV and not cheap and the OS isn't as good as the firestick and defo doesn't touch the Shield.

In terms of TVs, what size and budget are a good start. Hisense do some amazing budget TVs. Top end is OLED and QLED stuff but pricey.

Obviously then there is investment in sound if you want a cinematic experience but it's start to add up in cost.

Cheers, Not sure on the surrounding shelfs going up yet but around the 65 size.

No additional speakers at this point.

I have a fire stick already. Was hoping an android TV might be quicker or better in some way but if not then firetv is fine.

Techradar is useful for reviews. They review more than just TVs, so a bit of a generalist rather than a specialist site, but have some detailed info and opinions on the most recent models.

From what I read most people said Android TV is slow and buggy and most of the manufacturers don't support the updates for it. Most TV's have the core stuff built in now - the Samsung has Amazon, BT sport, Netflix, iPlayer, Now TV apps all built in for example.

I bought one of these for about 600 quid two years ago. Its sound quality is top notch, user interface on the phone as simple as you could wish for and it looks as good as Bale Kane Son up front.

Have you linked it to additional speakers or just the soundbar on its own?

im looking for just a soundbar myself, only have a small front room and don’t want loads of speakers all over the place, but have grown fed up of the poor sound quality from just the tv. Not looking for an IMAX cinema effect or anything, just a decent boost to the sound.

HDTV Test YouTube channel is good for television reviews, an OLED is what I’m looking at when I finally retire my Panny plasma... although some people prefer that quantum dot malarkey from Samsung...
