Iowa, as a new fan to tottenham, why tottenham?
Just interested out of curiosity.
Also regarding the shirt colours, by changing the colours every year, the manufacturers are hoping for extra sales.
The home colour will in general stay the same.
I don't have a good answer other than this.
I live in America and grew up with the, sadly typical, soccer (sorry for using that word it is what I know the sport as) is stupid attitude. That attitude is greatly changing but is going to take quite some time. The area of the country I grew up in was extremely isolated from the sport...not anymore but 20 years ago when I was 6 and developing a sports identity it was...as no high schools within 100 miles of me had the sport and only a handful of private Christian schools had it in the western half if the state of Iowa.
I went to college in eastern Iowa (starting in 06) where there is a very strong youth association. They have organized "club" soccer from u4 through high school age with the majority of high schools having the sport and my college having the sport. I started to get involved in watching it occasionally then. About that time ESPN started showing some BPL games on TV, though they did a poor job with it. NBCSports took over the PL last season and ran 100 commercials a day for it last summer to promote it. I bought into the hype and started watching preseason preview shows knowing I'd need a team to keep me interested.
I watched all of the previews and had no idea as the shows were geared towards those who aren't, essentially, brand new to the sport. I ended up taking a dozen, or so, of the hokey online "who should I cheer for" quizzes and Tottenham came up the most frequently. I also knew I didn't want to just follow Man U, or the other typical clubs "outsiders" follow because they are the easiest to follow and people know then even if they don't know the sport. I also didn't want a club that could be relegated or close to almost every year.
About a week before the first match I still hadn't picked so I just "f it, I'm supporting Tottenham."
I didn't join a forum, or do s ton of blog reading, during the season so I could form my own sense of being a fan without being influenced to think a certain way right from the start. I did follow a couple places I could find on Twitter just too keep up with the basic news...They followed back but quickly unfollowed due to my lack of knowledge and tweeting about Tottenham everyday I'm assuming.
Long story short I dint have a good answer other than I just decided on a whim and every time I watched s match on TV I felt something internal pulling for Tottenham and not anyone else. Had I started watching and felt that pull for someone else I'd have gone with it but pulled me in more. So much so that during the season I changed my phone and desktop wallpaper to the Tottenham logo and away from my NFL team...which might be a mortal sin for an American, I'm not sure but I guess I'll find out when I die.
I'm definitely part of the current eave of Americans falling in love with the sport and embracing it more and more. I have a countdown clock on my desk at work to the world cup and PL season. I know live in the second largest meteo area of Iowa and it's home to the top 5 or 6 and girls high school soccer programs in the state. The school district my 14 month old daughter is in have both girls and boys programs ranked in the top 3 in the state and both undefeated this spring.
I'm really pushing my daughter towards it as well. I bought a small skill size ball for her that she walks around the house kicking. She might be better at dribbling than I.
Yes, it's a German ball. My family is nearly 100 percent German so they are my second national club after America. I have family in Germany that I email with weekly.
Apologies for the rather long post. I'll let this get back to kit talk now
