Moussa Sissoko

I think that's a good point.

Back in August if you were told that Victor, Dier, Winks would spend a good chunk of time on the sidelines and Dembele would be gone in January and Sissoko would be the lynch pin of our midfield you would stand there stony faced BUT he has carried that challenge and responsibility and it has been the making of him.

It's been such a positive contribution to the team this season
But we’re in dire need of CMs as their clearly not good enough
I mean it’s not like we’re in the quarter finals of the CL or 3rd in the league even with those injuries...

Its such an interesting situation. Every time we look like we are 'down to the bare bones' or haven't got players that are good enough the end result always shows that we do well and cope.

This must largely be because of Poch. The training, the motivation and most of all the tactics and system. Replacements (ie the squad) are plug and play, the software is installed, they know the system, they know whats expected, so for 95% of the match they just run the program. Thats why against the 'lower' teams we make changes and still win the majority of those games. Just our training, coaching, system trumps anything they can offer.

That's why we are left with just looking for that bit of genius that might just swing it in those big match-ups. We don't always need that (as we have proven many a time) but having a Hazard type player really does give you that weapon thats unplayable.

Our ambition is to be better than that though mate; to win one or both of those tournaments. To do that we need to have at least one world class player in that midfield area, as good as Sissoko has been, or a world class CB like De Ligt, ideally both.

For sure though, currently, it is Sissoko then any of the other 3 midfielders on the match day team sheet. The others will have to rotate with each other.

Sissoko, he's the new beast! What an athletic specimen, i think he's hit peak form and fitness a bit late, but will be able to continue another 2-3 years for us at the same level. Looking forward to him ending his career here as he seems a great role model for the young ones and a genuine nice guy too.

He's done really well but thats a stretch too far in my view. In terms of physicality he has, but ability to keep the ball moving and play incisive passes they're poles apart. I think we desperately need a Dembele replacement because having 3 of your 4 CMs being unable to pass the ball well and being more defensive rather than attacking isnt the right balance

Revisionism at its very best. Incisive passing? Really? From a guy who produced 12 assists in 8 and half seasons playing in the Premiership? Not to mention the blind alleys he used to run in until Poch grabbed him by the neck....

My thoughts as well, Dembélé was ( imo) a player who offered so much but delivered so little. So much talent but no real end product.

The irony is that the Sissoko bashers were always on his back about his lack of natural talent yet the guy has managed to extract 250% of his abilities and put everything he has into his game.

On the other hand, the same posters used to fawn at Dembele who was using less than 50% of his capabilities. He could have become a world beater yet never had the mental abilities to get the best of the GHod-given talent he possessed. What a waster...

just think how good he could be if he could actually shoot on target, its amazing how professionals can be so poor at such a bread and butter part of the game.

Oh boy and you moan about revisionism!

Dembele was our most influential player for at least two seasons. Every thing we did as a team went through him during that time. I think you are being revisionist now. It's not a case of love Sissoko and hate Dembele.

I love Sissoko and feel he is doing very well now. He has his own skill set. He is fast, a decent passer and good at tackling. His problem though is a lack of belief in himself. That's what holds him back in my opinion. Confidence was something that Dembele never seemed to lack.

Agree to a point, but I would say Dembele was still frustrating to an extent. He was one of my fave players, but he would beat a man at ease with skill or brute strength and by doing so break the lines, but then would not have the confidence/self belief you attribute with Sissoko in that once breaking the lines (the thing that he can easily do) he would then go back on himself and play a safe pass sideways or back and lose the momentum he created in the first place. If he had worked as hard on his game as Sissoko he should have easily become better in this area and more productive in assists and goals - there is no way a guy with Dembeles talent couldnt of done that if he really pushed himself....

I was a great Dembele fan! My point was simply that the same things that frustrate people in Sissoko - especially his finishing - were actually more pronounced in Dembele. The guy produced an average of one assist per season, for crying out loud! He was lovely to watch - a typical sexy player. Not surprising that many people often turned a blind eye to his many deficits; the biggest being that he would beat three opponents, open the other team and then either run into a blind alley or play a backward pass. To be fair, he improved significantly in his last three years under Poch but he could have become such a massive player if only he had been able to "do a Sissoko" and channel all his talents into an end product on the field.

Maybe all the pressure helped harden him from a rock into a diamond? I have to clarify though that there is a difference between "pressure" and "abuse."

I know he’s mainly made of carbon, but there’s enough nitrogen and hydrogen in our Moussa for your suggestion to be scientifically implausible.
