Moussa Sissoko

It is probably too late in his career, but if he could develop a cool in front of goal, he'd be a complete package. He has shown great capacity to learn and develop, so I wouldn't put it past him next season. Send him to train with HK, and get HK to teach him the mental side of being a striker (as well as technique!).

Made some very important challenges on the edge of our box too. Has been very good this season. Rightly earns a place in starting 11.

I think he defended very well. Wasn't really involved much at all when we had the ball - a sensible tactic. Only did a couple of Sissokos in the whole match, so overall pretty decent.

My favourite bit was when he did the opposite of a Sissoko. He tried to control the ball about 3 yards to run onto it and ended up stopping it dead and running past it :D

During the game I actually thought it was the least confident on the ball he had looked for a few weeks, but reflecting back it was clear the strategy for the side was to sit deeper than usual and break forward less. So he kept it simple, played his part and did his job defensively.

Agreed. I thought last night was one of his poorer performances of this season, but it was still reasonable.

I think this is also an important point around what makes a 'good' player. If Sissoko had spent the game charging about like he usually can, it wouldn't have been in line with the clear strategy of the team but he may have looked better on an individual basis. The fact that he is tactically disciplined is one of the reasons he is trusted, and a 'good' player that can carry out the instructions of the coach. It's decision making and positioning at the right times, under pressure, which Sissoko is actually really good at. And why Deschamps calls him a soldier.

I'm fairly sure Deschamps called him a soldier because everyone was taking the tinkle out of him and he wanted to defend his player.

It was evident pretty much from the kick-off, when our full backs pushed forward straightaway, and Sissoko dropped straight back behind Trippier. That was how it was most of the first half. Sissoko managed to cover for Trippier whilst also keeping Pogba under control. I hope his injury is relatively minor, as Poch seemed to imply. He really does need a break though.

That goal didn't come through Trippier lacking cover, it came through Trippier telegraphing a hospital pass across his own back line.

EDIT: That's not to say that Trippier doesn't need cover or that Sissoko doesn't do that well, simply that a lack of cover wasn't the cause of Trippier's brain fart.

I agree with you entirely here. If we are having to use a player to babysit another player's failings then the player needing to be baby sat simply shouldn't be playing.

One of the things that I thought I noticed while at the game (and I haven't seen the goal again so don't know how true this actually is?) was that after Trippier had played the terrible pass, the intended receiver of the ball (was it Lamela?) made a pretty poor attempt at closing down Pogba. It was almost as if both Trippier and Lamela (although it could've been Eriksen or Winks - I only saw it once from my seat at Wembley) sort of left it to each other to close Pogba down even though we were always going to be in trouble as soon as we gave possession away in such a dangerous area with our own players committed to the attack that we were building.

Indeed.
But Sissoko wasn't on the pitch any more to put out the fire caused by the brain-fart.
That was the point.

Lamela had only just come on and (IIRC) wasn't immediately moving into the same role as Sissoko.

Having watched the MotD highlights when I got home, it looks like Lamela didn’t want to risk charging straight at Pogbrick as that would’ve given him an easy return pass with Lingard who then would’ve then been 2 on 1 with Martial against Alderweireld.

IMHO the misplaced pass was compounded by Trippier’s utter lack of pace, as in the time it took Lingard to gently lay the ball off I’m sure that Aurier or KWP would’ve been at Pogba’s heels to ensure he didn’t have time to look up and play that throughball.

Are you praising Sissoko here? And by the way, hun, I know how devastated you’ll be if Sissoko is injured as you’ve been such a fanboy of his. PM me if there’s anything I can do to get you through this challenging moment,
