Mitt Romney the next new leader of the free world!!!

I personally find it ridiculous that anyone can vote without showing ID. In 2010 I walked in to a polling station here and just said my name and voted. If I had wanted, I could have voted any number of times. Couldn't believe they didn't want me to prove who I was.

Hate on the republicans all you want, but I think its farcical that you can vote without proving who you are. It's not like people don't have time to get an ID before the election

You take your polling card to vote. It costs 50 dollars to get ID. If you introduce ID at least make it free for the poor. Disgraceful.

That's wrong. In times of crisis people want more government. Not less. I have no issues with PROPER social security. But it needs to be paid for. America spending 700 billion dollars a year of defence. Maintaining military presence in 160 countries is complete folly. That money should be spent on universal healthcare. I propose a global windfall tax on those with more than £10 million of 100 percent. No one that rich is so due to their own talent alone. Luck and timing is everything. The idea of the American dream is flimflam. In the US if you fall in hard times you're fudged.

A 100% income tax over £10 million? You understand that will raise the grand total of zero income, as nobody will ever earn over that much? Therefore if I earn my £10 million in 6 months, they I just wont work for the rest of the year. Close down my factories, shops etc... because whats the point in running it effectively for the governement?

But someone with 100 million can just go elsewhere. Football is a perfect example, lets see how Ligue 1 does when Hollande brings in his 70% income tax for over 1 million. My bet is nobody will want to go near them.

Good let them go. And they give up citizenship as well. And we cease all UK assets. Tax all global income like the US do for their citizens. If the whole world does the same thing then these lucky people have nowhere to hide. If the likes of Monaco carry on nuke the cesspool and take what's ours forcefully. Same with all of these talented bankers who got us in this fudging mess to begin with. They can all fudge off. When it goes tits up they want us to stand behind their liabilities!!? gonads. You want the money. YOU take the risk.

OK, who the f*ck are you and what have you done with Leeds?!

I didn't say income. 100 tax on assets. Houses, cash, bonds, whatever. 10 million overnight tax done. No one needs more than 10 million. Ever.

surely you had to prove who you were when you registered to vote?

i'm also assuming you have a voter registration card or something or your name was checked off a list?

if you can just walk in off the street, make up a name and vote then surely the parties would have been onto this years ago and voter turnout would be +100%

People want to trade in the UK they pay the price. Global enterprises won't close down their UK factories. They aren't owned by rich individuals. We the people set the terms of trade. It's our money that keeps the whole world turning.

See the announcement today, that we are getting a new bank support, to lend to business, but instead of lending it directly we are going to take on more of the banks bad debt, so they can lend more freely, how many times will they slap their dingdongs in our faces before we stand up and cut the f**kers off.

The real power structure is being ever more exposed.

Richie is either lying or he doesn't remember properly. You need to register to vote. The electoral register is rigorously maintained. You CANNOT vote without a polling card. End of.

The republican party needs to find a proper candidate. People like McCain and Romney are ridiculous, they need someone like Chris Christie who could more than hold his own in a debate with any Democrat. The Republicans need to move in to the 21st century with their social policies to compete over the coming decades. In an election where the economy is the biggest issue, economically right wing candidates should be winning around the world.

Again, I totally disagree with you about Chris Christie. And I should know, because he's my fudging (fat) governor, not that I voted for him. Full of hot air and falls into the Paul Ryan camp of "leveraging present growth on the future". To be fair though, I think most people vote for what's better for them now as opposed to what is better for the nation as a whole, long-term. He scuttled the transportation bill that would have created another mass transit option between NJ and NYC, and funneled that money elsewhere to fund more tax cuts for the wealthy and to appease large corporations headquartered in NJ.

Aren't right-wing economic policies in place in Europe? They've certainly been dictating the course of our economic policy in the US for the past 2 years after Republicans gained the House. I do know that classic conservative economic policy is not what the Republicans are touting these days. Bush had trickle-down, which Romney and Ryan still advocate. Their policies are to ensure that the wealth stays concentrated where it is, that we continue to consume fossil fuels, and to burden future generations by getting elected and re-elected now to appease the public. fudge Grover Norquist and his "no new taxes" pledge. It's fudged the Republican party over in the long-run.

And then with the IMF if a country gets in trouble they make sure the corporations get their money back. The world is a corporatist sham.

And how exactly can you do that? Honestly, how can you enforce such a ludicrous policy of seizing someone's assets and citizenship because they choose to move abroad?

As for paying international tax, how exactly does that work? If I'm working in California I have to pay US taxes AND UK taxes because I'm a UK citizen?

To be clear. I don't advocate more debt. We need a line in the sand. But we an pay for every penny of spending by taxing the rich. The truly rich.

Ask the US government mate. All global income is taxed as a US citizen. You say it's ludicrous. It could be implemented. Easily.

Global enterprises won't close their UK factories? Where have you been for the last 50 years, everything is produced in Asia these days because of cheap labour and lower taxes. Id be surprised if I had more than a dozen things in my flat made in the UK

To be fair it was a couple of years ago, and my memory is a bit hazy. I'm certain I didn't have to show any form of ID though, because I was shocked at the time about it. Perhaps I had a polling card, but I question that alone as being sufficient proof of identity.

I do somewhat agree about the price of an ID. Whether it should be free is up for debate, but $50 is a lot of money for some people

Such a red herring. Let's look at the facts:

1) Do you know what the penalty is for doing that? I know you're not stupid enough to do something like that, risking jail time and massive fines for a federal offense.
2) Incidence of this so-called voter fraud is rather low. There's simply no proof that it is occurring by the "busload" as some right-wingers claim.
3) Depending on your circumstances, to actually obtain that photo ID, you need to pay $35 to get the documentation to get the "free" voter ID card. Many Americans don't have driver's licenses or don't have access to their birth certificates, despite having SS cards and all other relevant documentation. It's the PHOTO caveat that screws people over (according to plan). But yeah, I'm sure most people have 4 hours to take off work to get their voter IDs (that's how long it can take, not making that up).
4) Finally, some states have disallowed voting on Sunday when it is well-known that certain constituencies in those states historically have gone to vote after Sunday services. There cannot be a good explanation for this...
