Micky van de Ven

The totally football podcast said VdV has 3 of the top 4 fastest ever speeds in the Prem.
Kyle Walker had the other.
Often times the top speeds are recorded when a defender is chasing back from a corner i.e. they don't have a ball at their feet, they aren't thinking deeply, they are just sprinting back at full pelt to 1 direct target.

His top speed is undoubtedly super impressive. But even more important is his acceleration. Dier too had good top speed, quite a few big centre backs to once they really get going. But in the majority of situations that's of little use if the acceleration isn't there to match it.

100% rarely do you ever see the following in one player

A) rapid acceleration
B) rapid top speed
C) rapid top speed and acceleration with a ball

He is a phenomenal specimen

D) physical strength to hold off opponents and doing so at speed.

It's part of the combination that made Bale so utterly special imo. And same for VdV.

Anyone else holding their breath every power run he does? In fear of him tearing his hamstring again, Chelsea game ptsd I guess..

Arguably his first poor game for us today, like the defenders around him (with the exception of Porro, who I think played a good match). Evidence for me how good Brighton were offensively in the 2nd half. No reason for knee-jerking or finger pointing, just keep working hard. The first half shows we are making progress.

His 3rd or 4th totally crap game this season.

By his lofty standards it weren’t a great performance, could only deflect the cross leading up to their 1st goal with his shin (which might’ve been why Udogie misjudged his attempted clearance) then got wrong footed easily for their 2nd.

I feel for VDV and the manager actually.

We have 3 or 4 younger CBs with great potential who need to be away from the club and getting game time. We have a 31 year old Davies who is a makeshift LCB, but not perhaps at the high level we require.

It's not only VDV. Must admit, watching Udogie last night it occurs to me that he need to be withdrawn from the front line a little and allowed to be coached and conditioned to have the bigger impact. We need a second Udogie at the club for the next phase.

Can one signing perhaps solve both these areas for Ange in January? I know we've looked at guys like Lloyd Kelly previously who can play both roles but he went to Saudi Sportswashing Machine. Personally, I think we'll focus on LB as the higher priority and then see if Vuskovic or Phillips can plug the other gap.
