Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

I don't see him going to another English club. Maybe that is naive. There are, however, a couple of clubs on the continent that i have a sneaky suspicion may employ Poch at some point during his career.

One concern I have is Juventus. I know Allegri is doing a good job - is there a chance he might take the national job if Conte goes to Chelsea? I think Juventus would be a hard one for any manager to turn down, and is a truly great club without the baggage that the job at the Real Madrid circus comes with. I could imagine that one being up Poch's street. The other is obviously Atletico. No idea how long Simeone might stick around, but should that job become available I'd also get a bit twitchy.

Yep, thats the two that concern me. I don't know why; just a hunch based on Poch's nationality, how he works and the fact that he seems like a true football man. I don't fear him going to United or Chelsea. I'd be very surprised if that happened. Who could turn down Juventus, on the other hand? Inter could also be a dark horse destination.

Some of those players that were mentioned specifically in the post that I commented on originally - Rose, Kane, Eriksen, Dembele. All of these players are blessed with at least 2 of the main attributes required to be a top class footballer.... skill, vision, pace, strength, confidence. What they needed was a manager who could come in and provide the organisation to ensure that their attributes could be harnessed into a unit. Funny enough there were two things that I thought we lacked somewhat prior to the Pochettino revolution - fitness and balls. He has added those two things in spades.

Obviously the players had huge amounts of talent. Pochettino isn't going to waste his time with players without that.

But as we've seen repeatedly that talent isn't enough. Pochettino has developed that talent further. And he's done so with a lot of our young players, like he did at Southampton before that.

As an all round team, this has to be the best since 85 or 86 - and maybe is even better. To have such a tight defence, coupled with flair players in midfield, plus a work ethic and team spirit, which is probably the envy of virtually every other club...it is remarkable. It makes me want to take the next 3 months off work to do nothing but watch, think and dream SPURS :)

Yep he has added a team structure and organisation to that talent (as well as improved the fitness and workrate about 100%).

Perhaps the biggest being the almost total elimination (touch wood) of the brainfart. Partly by ruthlessly getting rid of the players most prone, partly no doubt by drilling the team in training but also through bringing in Aldereiweld who has helped bring stability and reliability to the back four.

I was thinking of cutting out Dembele's tendency to dwell on the ball. That is a pretty fundamental change in his game and one the has improved him immeasurably.

This is the biggest thing for me. Mentality. We now look and act like real winners for the first time in a very long time.

Even if we fall short this season, it will not be for the lack of trying. When I look at the way we go about our business on the pitch I am reminded of the early championship winning Utd teams under Ferguson. They had a hunger to succeed that I see in these young men too. The will to win among the Spurs players is almost palpable.

Alderweireld would get my vote for player of the year if it was due today.

Key characteristics in the strongest teams are hunger and desire... It can make up for a lack or talent and is why some players have become greats who weren't great players

We, historically have massively suffered from it as we have had talent but not players willing to apply themselves

Ive heard people say we have been lucky... Well the harder we work the luckier we get (Gary Player I think) and this team is the hardest working I've seen

i always saw that his tendency to dwell on the ball was partly due to a lack of options around him. i believe poch found a way to fit him in by making the other players aware of his dribbling ability, and to make themselves available for the forward pass that Dembele is capable after he beats a player.

It is certainly easier to find a pass if your team mates are in space but I do not think that this is the sole reason for his improvement. Quite often before, Demebele did not even look for the option or would refuse the pass in favour of holding onto the ball.

I agree, in the past we have had players who have made runs for him but he never released the ball early enough. Now thanks to a kick up the arse by Poch he is doing just that.

This is great. The late coach of the AFL team I support did something similar when he was first appointed. He saw the club physio (or something) just wearing civilian clothes, and asked him why he wasn't wearing the club clothes. The physio said "because I'm just the physio".

Then the new rule came in that everyone at the club had to wear the uniform. One of the players once got sent home as he was wearing the wrong socks.

It's standards like this which set the tone for the way the team plays. Elite Standards as the late great Phil Walsh said. Elite standards in everything you do, whether it is how you take a free kick, to how you walk through the door in the morning. If you take short cuts on standards on things that "don't matter", sooner or later the standards on those things that do matter drop as well.

Poch seems to sing from the same hymn sheet.
