Mathys Tel

Where do I begin with Johnny Mathys? I think the love story with Spurs has begun today.

That first goal for Spurs brought a certain smile to my face.

When that child was born, I bet nobody realised he'd become a Spurs legend one day.

Had a good game, might be something there after all?
Think he has been slowly improving as he has got more game time which is exactly what you'd expect of a 19 year old. Remember Kulus debut? He was awful. Think he has got all the attributes, yes 50m is a lot and we would be paying for potential, but he looks to me like someone who could go far - he is so young, and his attitude looks top notch especially the way he fronted up to fans. Hope we do sign him and watch him blossom....

Really promising performance, best I'd still lean towards another loan maybe with some pretty strict conditions that make it likely we will sign him. 60m still feels a bit of a hefty punt on a player whose quality we can't yet really be sure of.

Think the noise out club is what they are seeing in training has them thinking buy.

This is the type of risk we may need to take (as long as the salary/wages isn't where we couldn't move him on). A 19 year old with top tier league and CL experience who could potentially replace Son aren't exactly common.

Agreed, question is would he actually want to join us permanently?

It's £45m to buy him.

I think @Bullet did a breakdown of what we would have to pay. I can’t find the post through the search function on my phone but what he said seemed logical. Maybe someone else can find the post.

It's €60m all in. €10m of that is the loan fee. Which is already paid.
So if we want to make it permanent we have to pay €50m or £45m.

So to buy him is £45m.

Personally I'd have him, as he can play across the front 3. We are closing on a day when Sonny will become an ambassador or move to the MLS so with Tel and Moore we have raw talent to cover the next four or five years until Tel inevitably joins Real.

I'm down for these kind of speculative purchases but I do feel you can do them at better prices than what has been reported.

Yeah I get that I was taking into account the loan fee. I'm not totally against it, it's just that it goes a little against the model I would suggest which is signing young and undervalued whereas he's closer to a peak valuation but is far from a peak player if you get what I mean.

As I say in my mind another loan with even tighter conditions would make a lot of sense for me. Even with a higher fee potentially but with more certainty of Tel as a player, but those are just my thoughts.

It's a balance (think you know)

- Bergvall, Vuskovich are probably the ideal type of speculative youth buy
- But you have to push out sometimes, Tel may not seem that far along, but he has played two and a half seasons for Bayern, 60 appearances with 12 goals for a 19 year old wide forward, plus 16 CL appearances. He's a lot closer to certainty than you are giving him credit for.

For comparison, Lamine Yamal who I would say anyone would likely rate as a $100M player
- Is 19 years old
- In his 3rd season for Barca
- Has 66 league appearances with 11 goals and 21 CL appearances

Tel was rusty coming in, adapting to the PL in a struggling side but the data says this is a smart gamble.

Where we would fudge up is if we paid him wages that made it impossible to offload if in the long run it doesn't work out.
