Mathys Tel

I think people are getting a little carried away. He had a decent-good performance and scored a fantastic goal, but it's very reactionary to now speak as if he's proven himself. That's a status that will be proven (or not) over the coming season. A great goal against Chelsea is just a singular moment, it's the consistency of moments that determines a players actual status.

He's scored great goals for us before. He's been shoved around all over the pitch, he's been let down by previous managers, he's been held to a higher standard than most players at the club IMO within those contexts, and he has shown that when he gets the chance to play with decent players around him, he can be very good.
You talk about the 'consistency of the moment'...in order for that to have a chance, there has to be the 'consistency of appearance' which means he will need a good run in the side before you can judge him on that criteria.

The criticism of Tel, and the weird standards he was being held to by some of our fans was just not on.

Even my brother texted me as halftime and said ‘Tel - most frustrating player ever.’ Really? After that half? Whatever you think of him, he’d clearly been a huge threat for us. No other player had done more.

I think people assume that successful dribbles are way more common than they actually are. And for some reason Tel gets held to a much higher standard than Savio or Kudus.

Sky peddled some narrative that he had been 'wasteful' at the Bridge before his goal. It was total, and utter, nonsense, and typical of the disproportionate stick he gets...

He's also a young player who was forced into playing many, many minutes in super important relegation battle games in an injury-hit squad under numerous different managers. He never hid or shied away from his tasks. He was bought for his potential and until now has not had a many or fit teammates to give him the opportunity to be coached/developed.

If you're thinking we're having a wide player debate now, wait until we have Savio, Kudus, Tel, Mudryk and Odobert fit at the same time. Not forgetting that Kulu has that string to his bow and is looking leaner. We know Marmoush can operate there as well.

These guys should push each other to higher levels of performance.

I think we also forget that being able to watch every game is still a reliable new thing for the majority of fans. There is probably this idea that in the past Lennon, Ginola, Waddle & Jons would beat the full back every time they get the ball. The times they cut back and pass to the Centre Back wouldn’t make MOTD.

IMG_5332.jpegReality is 3-4 successful dribbles a game will have you comfortably top 5 in the league.

I'm sure he will get his chances, it will down to him performing to keep getting those chances.
