Mathys Tel

Yep, its can't simply be down to the manager, football is not that simplistic. Good players transcend managers IMO, you go out to prove a point, yes there is a level of over coaching in the game but also players are not robots, I don't buy the idea that everything is about what they are told to do.
You cannot transcend the manager when you are not picked which was often the case with Tel after a good performance.

I think many forget how young he is. That he works tirelessly, is fearless to stand up in the face of criticism. That he stood alongside Ange when supporters were making noise at Ange.

I want to see him thrive with us. I want to see him supported and treated far better than Thomas Frank did. There is definitely a big player there and he needs supporting to be able to find his best level.
Dude, I could not agree with you more.

I do think the club have some big decisions regarding the attacking part of our squad in the summer. Muani goes back to his parent club and on balance I don't think we should be buying him. Richi has a year left and could easily leave. Obviously, we've already let Johnson go from the squad that started this season.

Tel needs to now force his way into the nucleus of the squad. He needs to ensure he is involved in every game whether it is starting or from the bench. He also needs a manager that will be more fair to him.

i love Tel. Listen he should have passed i get that.

But he ATTACKS the other team. That's why Frank never liked him. He tries to attack the other team. He tries to make things happen. I love that.

He also works really hard. We had years of watching Sonny and Moura with no defensive smarts. Tel may not be at Sonny's level but if I'm a full-back I'd rather have him ahead of me in the tougher games. He's not scared to get stuck in.

It's a strange comparison but in some ways he's like Dirk Kuyt. Started as a striker and found a very effective place in the wider areas of the pitch. Eventually, he wasn't measured as much on goal output but his overall contribution to the team. Johnson had goals for a while but he had not real contribution.

Interesting, I’ve thought that he doesn’t work that hard and that it’s a weakness of his! And/or he doesn’t has the stamina for it. Always looks tired or lackadaisical closing down and tracking back to me.

I've been a bit critic, and must admit seeing his age just shocked me! I thought he was 22/23.

I'll view him through a different lens now.
I'm still far from convinced, but will adjust my expectations

He just doesn’t seem to have that natural ability to beat players. But he strikes the ball well, even if his end product is inconsistent at this stage. And I love his intent.

He can beat players, I think he just lacks confidence in it. A couple of times last night he actually tried a bit of skill and the player brought it and he could have just slipped past them but he either didn’t or did it with hesitation.

I was skeptical about him to be honest, but I actually think if we can “unlock him” he has the potential to be elite. That’s a big IF though.

I think his criticism on the pitch has been in black and white with abject performances … add a little contrast, he’s young, in a new league, pressure with a price tag (not his fault), pressure with expectancy coming from Bayern, not really getting any chances for form.

Last night was his best performance, if he can justify starting and kicks on we could have a very good player on our hands.

Remember Henry was pants for about 15 games for Arsenal when he first started.

He was right to shoot just should have been better and great save from the keeper. You think Kane squares it?

Remains a clearly very talented player. Very good combination of qualities that if it all comes together for him could make him a really good player. To me he's reminiscent of Son. Pace, great ball striking with both feet, but often needs a bit of space to run into or to attack a defender, not a 1 vs 1 dribbly specialist and both his combination play and hold up play isn't at a great level. Seems to have a good eye for getting into scoring positions. Not the player who runs the game, not the player you'd rely on to be your primary creative force, but capable of getting a lot of end product.

That comparison with Son is obviously about style of play and potential, he's not there now and who knows what levels he can reach. But with his seemingly really good mentality, still being young and those above mentioned qualities I wouldn't bet against him stepping up.

20 years of age and he seems to have all the ability and i thought he was very good last night. What is sad is when i hear fans moaning about him. He is still a kid trying to fit into a stuggling side and it would be nice/good to see him push on. There is no doubt IMO that he has ability.

Stylistically he has that 'prancing horse' approach. It really is the opposite to flow.
Unless you're then lighting from a virtual standstill ...it's hard to regularly beat a guy. He doesn't particularly have a trick either although good with his feet.

He's technically really good (see how a few times he took that line breaking ball from VDV expertly despite being marked) and isn't afraid to shoot.

The shame last night, and probably a potential game changer missed, was deciding not to square it to Gray. 2-0 then a the roof would have lifted off.

I think a combo of our youngsters Tel, Odobert, Xavi, Sarr, Gray , Bergvall has great potential.

Your last sentence is why I don't buy the 'Our recruitment has been poor' stance. I believe in a couple of years we will look back and be patting our back at our buys with at the very least Vuskovic, Gray, Bergvall, Tel, Odobert and Simons.

Yes we need a couple more 'ready made' players, but that's quite some nucleus of a team we will have on our hands with a year or two more development.....

If you go and look at the Striker market it’s going to cost an enormous amount to get in players better than Solanke or Richarlison. Your talking about £80M+ on a player like Igor Thiago that’s got one season as a productive goalscorer.

Tel for me is our best shot at getting another 20+ league goals a season #9. Without Europe next season he should be our 2nd choice CF with one of the youngsters as 3rd.

And I'm sure the hope was Bentancur Romero Maddison would be those type of players...and they still could be .

That's before you get to Deki, Kudus, Porro etc.

This terrible period might have a silver lining, that the somewhat enforced blooding of the youngsters is all front loaded experience, good and bad.

By my reckoning the right guy could pull all this together.

Is that Poch 2.0???????
