Mateus Fernandes Official

I think my big question of Mateus is could we deploy him alongside a double pivot of Bents and Tonali? Give him license to be the 3rd midfield defensively but also pull all the strings further forward and adopt a number 10 position when we have the ball.

It would seem harsh for one of the Tonali, Bents or Mateus not to be on the pitch when someone like Gallagher is playing 10.

I've not seen enough of Mateus to know whether giving him this role might just distil his qualities.

Those three can certainly play together with various licenses and (depending on your taste) certain responsibilities. He really feels to me like someone who can dictate our play. He's always scanning, always seems to see things, to my eye makes the right decision pretty much all the time, and could certainly operate from slightly deeper positions. What a talent.

He's the calibre of midfielder we've needed for years. Like you say all of those attributes just come to him naturally. As much as I'm a searcher for perfection and will critique until we get it I do like the signings we've made over the last 2 years. They've massively improved our technical floor. Now it's just about filling in any remaining gaps, but also never just accepting mediocrity. We want a midfielder filled with players of Fernandes quality and then we will cooking.

I would play Fernandes deeper next to Bents to allow use of his full passing abilities. Or both in the #8 role either side of Bents as a #6.

Bentancur is still the most reliable defensive option we have in the middle of the park. He's become a terrier of a player but also capable of playing accurate, one-touch passes in close quarters to move the ball effectively and maintain possession. He can take some of the load off of Fernandes playing through the press as well as protecting the defensive line while the team gels. He starts for me.

There was a moment in the game yesterday around 61 minutes where Bentancur slightly over hit a pass to Fernandes. In one fluid movement while under pressure, Fernandes controlled the ball, Cruyff turned away from the Charlton player and played a forward pass to Tel. 99% of player would lose the possesion in that situation and it would have been Bentancurs fault more than the player recieving the over hit pass. It’s a level of technical ability that we have just not seen in the midfield since Dembele. Well Ndombele but he was too lazy to do it consistently.

And that whole hearted Sonny smile 😁
Getting really good vibes from Savio, both of them look great alongside each other
Agree, it was nice to see Porro Fernandes Savio Richie all chatting together presumably in Portuguese, then we have the bond of Savio and Marmite from Emirates Marketing Project, plus the bond of VdV and Marmite from Wolfsburg and the bond of Xavi and Tel from PSG and the bond of Xavi and Savio from PSV and it all feels very 'bonded'.
