Mark Clattenburg

It's a concoction isn't it?
-No fuss when the alleged comment was made.
the allegation is bought by players who had clearly lost control of their discipline during the game.
-The allegation was raised after some of these players allegedly threatened the match officials after the game.
the story from Chelsea is already evolving.
-Chelsea already have a rep for not taking racism seriously.

It seems to me the accounts of the other officials will be massively important here. If the refs comment could be heard by players quite remote from the conversation then they would definitely have heard this through their headsets.
It's checkmate already.

I agree with this. Sounds inconceiveable that comments could have been made by Clattenburg without the other officials hearing. But it is always difficult to prove a negative - ie something you HAVENT done or said.

The onus is on Chelscum to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Clattenburg DID racially abuse whoever it was.

Something has to be done.
ALL complaints/questions on the field should come from the captain. Any others should be punished within reason. A player who DIRECTLY CONFRONTS a ref and argues a decision should be carded immediately; if that player has a complaint, they should get their skipper involved immediately. Their skipper should be on the scene fast and the skipper should do ALL the talking.

Ironic if the skipper is John Terry.

Chelsea investigate claims fan abused Danny Welbeck

Chelsea have started an investigation after reports one of their fans made a racist gesture towards Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck.

:-k

There seems to be a common element with the majority of 'racial incidents' recently.. It's Chelsea..

ANGRY referees are threatening to boycott Chelsea matches.

Fed-up officials have already held talks about not taking charge of Blues games — and even discussed all-out strike action.

Ex-Premier League ref Clive Wilkes says the men in the middle are disgusted by Chelsea’s pursuit of Mark Clattenburg for allegedly using “inappropriate language” to John Obi Mikel last Sunday — a claim the official denies.

And they feel let down by FA chiefs and the PFA in the race-row saga.

Wilkes said: “I keep in touch with a lot of the lads and there is such a strength of feeling about what is happening to Mark.

“I know a few referees who are even talking about boycotting Chelsea games because of all this.

“Remember, it’s not the first time Chelsea have targeted a referee — there’s been Anders Frisk and Graham Poll.

“And some refs are now saying enough is enough.”

Wilkes, 57, from Gloucester, added: “It’s no exaggeration to say the refs in this country have never felt lower.

“They are so disillusioned. They feel vulnerable, feel that they are being left isolated — that they are getting no backing, no support.

“They want to speak out themselves but are too frightened, they fear they will be sacked if they go public with their grievances.

“There have even been murmurings about strike action but that’s very much the last resort.

“They’d much prefer to get around the table with the FA, PFA, the clubs and players to sort this out as quickly as possible.”

Swedish ref Frisk was forced into retirement when he received death threats after he sent off Didier Drogba at Barcelona in 2005 and Poll had a run in with John Terry a year later.

In 2010, Scottish referees went on strike in protest at their treatment, forcing chiefs north of the border to bring in officials from abroad to prevent games being called off.

Kevin Friend, 41, is in charge of Chelsea’s match at Swansea today

Good to see. This is what I suggested a few days ago.

Targeting the referees undermines the game of football. The referee is there to be the arbiter of the rules and fair play. Any attempt to manipulate the referee undermines this. This includes diving and Fergie-style manipulation, but what Chelsea are doing is going a huge step further. The next step would be bribery or physical intimidation, although you could argue trying to destroy someone's livelihood is worse than bribery.

You could also argue I am judging them before the evidence is in. However, the criticism is how they have done it. If they had real evidence for the accusations, they should have compiled it and made an official complaint without fan-fair or rabid mob. Clattenburg would have been found guilty and banned. But they made their allegation in public, before they had their internal investigation which led to them dropping one of their accusations. Now, if Clattenburg is found not guilty, there will still be some questions whenever he has a bad game.

Meanwhile by defending Clattenburg so publicly SAF has exploited the opportunity to strengthen the bond between the two. Very touching, and so very reassuring for the rest of us.

More so, Chelsea has with this incident managed to alienate every referee out there. Good luck getting decisions now.
