I know what you mean, I followed the likes of Parrett, Bostock, Onomah, Mason for years and years... eagerly anticipating this breakthrough standout player... records smashed as they score in every game... then... hmmm. Just about make it into the squad. Perversely I didn't hear much about Kane until BOOM. I do like Edwards as he is that scampering little trickster we lack. Very hard to tackle someone like that in the box, jinking around, ready to collapse if breathed upon. I have high hopes for him. Again.

This was the best thing about Kane. He magically appeared, in a position we had been lacking in since Berbatov, at a level of quality that would have smashed our transfer record or (more likely) led to Chelsea poaching him from under our noses.

With Edwards, I am especially hopeful for the very same reason. It is pretty clear that a tricky wing-forward of world class potential is what we need to move up to the next level: a Hazard/Sanchez/Mane type player. But, like at CF, players here are in very short supply and therefore often out of our price range or a bit of a gamble. Even at just 18 you see players in his position have a big impact on the first team, so if he is as good as people say he is, maybe next year is our year ;)
 
Agree with @Pandy & @Bullet , Edwards not only is highly rated, but is a position where we could do with something new/different.

I would say his success depends on his intelligence, way too many English "next best things" have failed (or at least failed to progress to next level) in that wing/forward type role due to not being smart enough with the ball (not varying the game, not releasing the ball at right times, etc.). The hope is Poch seems to be able to make players improve that part of game (Walker a good example), so hope is there for him.

I get what you're saying but Edwards' football IQ is already very high, there's no issues there. Technically and mentally there isn't much we can teach him but it's physically I'd expect Poch to really bring him on over the next couple of years. Stamina and strength are the two main things he really needs to work on, if he could eke out a tiny bit more pace as well then that would benefit him too.
 
I agree Yoof, I hope his pace will increase when he gets a bit stronger. I've only seen him 5 or 6 times but he's never a winger/wide player, he reminds me of Zola and I hope he can be as good.

Good stuff, thanks Yoof.

But how about attitude? This is so important in an exceptional talent like Edwards. Is he the kind that doesn't mind getting down to hard work and is not too easily distracted?
 
He doesnt remind me of Messi. I saw Messi when he was 17. Edwards is not even close to him. Lennon showed far more at age 18 than this guy. IMHO We are over-rating this kid.

What is being written and said about Edwards is quite different to what we've heard about those others you mention.

Of course there are no guarantees with young players.

Well there could be some truth to that, fans at most clubs do tend to overate youngsters from their youth teams. I have seen a lot of kids crash and burn after being covered in hype. Will Edwards be the same? lets hope not.
 
Lennon was 18 when we signed him, right? So he was 17 in the one season he played for Leeds in the Championship? Lennon came to Spurs to compete with the international superstar that was Wayne Routledge - who promptly got injured giving Lennon a chance and run in the first team where he did really well.

Edwards just turned 18 in December. He hasn't had a chance to prove himself in the Championship - in fact Pochettino seems to value working in training with him and our coaches as better for player development than playing in the Championship, that's probably why he hasn't had that chance yet. The competition for Edwards to get into our team in the league have been Alli, Lamela, Eriksen, Son, Sissoko... A step up or two from Wayne Routledge.

I think basing judgement on how much these two players showed in league football at 18 is less than informative.

His style reminds me of messi, the balance, the masterful control of the ball and sublime techniques, low centre of gravity. That is all.

Messi is the world's best for two simple reasons. He passes the ball into the net like Greavsie and his decision making is exemplary. For one who scores so many goals he is always happy to play someone else in if they are better placed.

Edwards doesn't do any of that yet (but who does). He will learn to be better but does have qualities that few other youngsters have.

I'm not even rating him. Just a style observation.
