I was having this discussion with a friend re: him and Skipp (who is dynamic and has some fizz). I think the value of players like Amos gets lost in what the public look for in a young player. I suspect he is a rare bird in so much as his quiet, calm and unspectacular efficiency is not an especially common talent. I felt he played the pre-seasons like he was a few years older, never looked fussed and did a great job as the shield. I hope he thickens up a bit more, but beyond that, I like the look of him a lot!

unless we splurge and get an obvious worldie player as a new signing - i'd actually prefer we grow and develop the young talent we do have

i didn't pay particular attention to him in the pre seasons, but he was an unfussy player, consistent and kept the shape well; sometimes, with more confidence and experience, other parts will come out and acclimatise to the epl

Indeed. I think his positioning and anticipation for the most part was really good. Anticipation especially - he seemed to get a heck of a lot of interceptions and it shows he can play our system well. Sometimes I thought he was a little too deep here and there but generally he looked like he belonged. And he received the ball a lot in tight areas, and distributed it with calm. He also pinged a few cross field balls, and looked forward where he could.

At 21 he might not get too much bigger but I wouldn’t be surprised if the mental side of the game was the piece he had down well, especially considering a youth career where he’s had to play a bunch of different positions.

Not even trying to be funny here - I said that, almost word for word, about Kane (though I think I may have included "donkey" as well).

And, when you think about it - even now Kane has no single outstanding attribute. Not super fast/strong/physical, not ridiculous at dribbling, not incredible in the air...

I think Kanes single strength is his drive to improve every facet of his game, even if only by 1% at a time. He is a solid 7/8 in everything, a 10 in nothing, kind of thing.

Not that Im looking to suggest Amos is the same, or will develop in the same way, just pointing out making judgements now doesnt often add up to much (and the very same goes for those over hyping players, how often is "the next big thing" actually the next big thing?)

I kind of get what you are saying, his problem is that during this tour Skipp is the one who has caught the eye and stood out more.

I was pleased to see Eyoma play at centre back, he doesn't look like a modern fullback to me and I thought he'd be better in the centre, got pace, strength and comfortable on the ball.
 
SPURS IN AMOS TALKS

Tottenham are set for talks with Luke Amos over a new contract, Sky Sports News understands.

The 21-year-old impressed on the club’s pre-season tour of the USA, starting all three games against Barcelona, Roma and AC Milan.

Initial discussions are understood to have been pencilled in for when the central midfielder and the squad return to England.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino also admitted Amos had the chance to start the first game of the season against Saudi Sportswashing Machine due to injuries in midfield.
 
Love players that force their way through much like Kane did.

Hope this kid gets a chance, would be happy to sell Sissoko and Dembele and spend the year blooding Amos Onomah and giving more game time to Dier in midfield where I think he is better then defence.

I know what you mean, but there are tens of world class midfielders that are slight e.g. Kante, Modric, Silva, Iniesta etc.
I think Amos, Onomah, Skipp, Reo Griffiths, Bennetts, Edwards, all of these are good enough to take 'backup' slots in our squad, a real shame we are letting them go one by one.
