Lionel Messi

Amazingly enough, Messi makes the All-Time Top European Goalscorers Table on three different occasions: 2011-12 (73 goals), 2010-11 (53 goals) and 2009-10 (47 goals).

He'll most probably be there again for the 2012-13 season as he's already on 30 goals so far.

Our own Clive Allen makes the Table as Tottenham's only representative in 1986-87 with 49 goals...

Thanks for this statto

So that's 4-5 games out of which chances are the top dogs are rested anyway

I think an extra few games a season is hardly the turning point, especially keeping in mind the PL starters are often rested

I have seen mid-week Spanish / Italian games over the season at least 3-4 times, personally

There was one such occurrence - 3/4 weeks ago

Remember - they have to make up the winter break

So do you not think he would succeed in England then?

Various posters have mentioned numerous slight players who have come from Spain and have produced big time!

Bitter much Arc?

Can you least admit Messi is an incredible talent regardless of you being a fan boy of Cristiano ArcspacE?

Its funny how in recent years players have come over from Spain and ripped the prem to pieces. Silva, Carzorla, Mata, Aguero, Michu etc.
.

Agreed, not only ripped the prem but there is an argument that they have also all become the star player for their respective teams. Also worth noting that all the aforementioned players were completely outshone in La Liga by Messi.

The 'Messi would not do it in the prem' argument is just another in a long list accusations that Messi disproves time and time again. First it was Messi cannot do it in big games, then it was English teams, then it was against teams in England, then Mourinho sides and now this. If he ever decides to join an English team then he'll no doubt disprove this one too.

When was the last time a player from the Prem topped the champions league scorer charts? Not in a long while i'm guessing; Messi has topped it for the past 3 or 4 seasons. What does that suggest?

That would be Cristiano Ronaldo with Manchester United in 2007-08...

Messi has scored his goals in 66 (or 67?) games this calendar year, which means he will probably end up playing over 70 games. How many English players play more games?

As for easy of scoring, perhaps use Ronaldo as an example. His goals for United in his last three seasons went 23, 42, 26 (118 in 292 games); then he got 33 (from less games), 53, 60 (167 goals in 167 games). That's an increase from 0.4 goals per game to a goal a game (2.5 fold)). So either its easier to score a lot of goals in Spain, or Ronaldo got much better over one summer, or he is playing for a much better team (compare CL performances of United and Real), or he is playing a very different role in the team. Even if Ronaldo has improved and Real are better and his role is different, can this account for such a large increase in goals per game.

You missed one: can't score with his head
