You can try and distract from the point by focusing on terminology but the fact remains a player isn't likely to be looking at a side finishing 17th in the table and thinking that they are in a good position to progress in the immediacy.

But for the sake of dragging it out...

Flirting with - skirting around the edges without really getting stuck in

Relegation battle - in the midst of it week to week during the run in with it up in the air whether you're gonna survive or not.

There are 5 clubs that are more attractive than us, based on history. For the sake of argument, let's include Saudi Sportswashing Machine and Villa, as they had good seasons. We are more attractive than all the rest, so I don't see a difference between finishing 17th or 8th. What we need to do, is finish in the top 4/5 so that we can attract a better quality of player period.

@billyiddo is naive to think that players consider much more than their pay packet (first) and where they will be living (second) when deciding which club they will join.

More than aware of that - if you read back to the initial starting point you'd see how the conversation started.

@Lemonade Money it was bedford saying we were more attractive to players than Saudi Sportswashing Machine (or whoever?) because of the trophy win - so seems at least me and you are in agreement that's not the case going by the post above :)

If it’s all only based on league position then why are Manchester United able to attract both Cunha and Mbuemo in spite of being similarly awful in the league, not winning a cup, and not being in the champions league next season?
Historic profile has a big significance and players will know that we are extremely unlikely to finish 17th or lower next season. We will be one of the main contenders as long as we pay enough to player, club and agent etc

So I'm a sought after 24-25 year old and 2 clubs are interested in me, Spurs and Toon. Which club do I join?

Money - I woudl say that there isn't much in it to be fair. I'm probably going to earn very similar salaries at both clubs.

Location - London every time

Facilities - Spurs training centre and stadium wins by a mile

Trophies - both have a 2025 trophy. Both have CL football. Saudi Sportswashing Machine would surely be favourites to get CL again via the league position.

Managers - personal choice I guess.

It's a close call. I think both clubs would trump Villa but not Pool, City, Goons and Chelscum. Utd is a much longer conversation, but I reckon they might just shade it based on worldwide brand and salary.

Who said it was only based on league position? I certainly never.

They haven’t managed to maintain being in Europe and getting back in

I still think other factors would come in to play. The main one being who is paying the most, the second one being where the missus wants to live! Historically, a foreign player would be more familiar with us. Just looking at the league, Saudi Sportswashing Machine qualified for the CL. London is probably in our favour, although a player might look at living costs and prefer Saudi Sportswashing Machine. A player might look at both managers/clubs to see what they had won.

IMO 90% would join Spurs over Saudi Sportswashing Machine at present due to location and us being a bigger name.

Yep, it makes it the unknown as we've only had CL in the 22/23 season in this decade and didn't get back in.

Their takeover is relatively recent and you can't really see a trend yet. Our squad is mostly refreshed and in the post Covid years we've got the new revenue streams.

It's a close call between our clubs. I'd still rather be Toon or Spurs than Villa though.
