Juan Foyth

Championship? Already looks ready for the PL and has made his debut for Argentina.

Maybe so, but there is a big difference between playing in a back 3 against Dortmund when they are playing without a central striker and their key playmaker and playing in a back 4 against a decent premier league attack.

He is stronger than he looks, bit like our two Belgians. Would expect him to gradually get stronger over the next couple of years as is normal.

I hope he does get stronger but he is currently nothing like as strong as Toby and Jan. But I agree he is still young, I remember when Bale was just kin and bone.

What I would really like to see is more sub appearances from the likes of Foyth, Walker-Peters and some of other young players in the last 15-20 minutes once we have secured the win i.e. 2 or 3 goals ahead

Especially considering Foyth played as an attacking midfielder up until he was 16 years old, so being a CB is still a fairly new position to him even not accounting for being just 21.

I must confess, personally I would love to see him given a run out as a defensive midfielder, I really think with the right coaching he would have the right skill set to excel in that position, especially as many have said he looks so comfortable on the ball

He will be class - very much like Rio at a young age for me. Quality on the ball, could easily play DM if needed I reckon but can still be shaky defensively but that will come with experience. Him and Sanchez are the future as Verts/Toby reach the twilight days of their time here and both Foyth and Sanchez are the future for us and are being bedded in perfectly....

If Poch works his magic (like he has with Sissoko) in terms of pragmatism, we have a real talent on our hands.

Agree with both of the above. He has just turned 21 and has years in front of him as he learns. That run he went on in the 2nd half showed he has the ability and quick feet to be a star.

I would go as far as to say that Foyth should be one the first players on the teamsheet when we play against lower table teams, especially at home. He is made to playe in a back three and gives us so much, despite his tender years, in terms of constructing play from the back. He also allows the right wing back to stretch play and give us needed width.

I like Foyth, but I dont like a back 3 against weak teams. It means we end up with 7 outfielders who are unlikely to threaten the goal and our wing backs really aren't of a high enough quality to compensate

He did a good job at right-back, he's not quick enough for the role though. Today was basically all-out defence from him, but that's not what we need in 90% of the games we play. He was effectively right-back in a back 5. We need someone who can get up and down and squeeze the play higher up the pitch.

He looks perfect for the right-side of a back 3 though, imo.

I agree with that. It’s good to know he can do a job there, but we need a proper RB

Trippier isn’t quick - till the summer he can be a stop gap.

We do need a new one

I think Poch could do like he did with Dier, get this kid tuned up as a DCM. Pair him up with Big Vic or Sissoko is you're worried about his risk taking or physicality.

Think the upsides with his forward passing and stepping forward runs could be a winner.

Can't decide whether my favourite bit was the low intelligent cross he made for Lucas in the first half (Trippier have done his usual curling cross to no one) or when he raced after been caught up the pitch get Sanchez out of trouble with a covering tackle (Trippier doesn't have the pace to even bother doing that).

Foyth playing as a WB til the summer would be a really poor option if we play a back 3 - we just wouldn’t get the attacking input needed from a RWB in games which are almost must wins. RB in a back 4 would be marginally better but personally I’d just play a proper RB and hope they play well

He has a decent cross on him, seen it a few times this season.

At this stage, a rb that doesn’t fudge up is a step up

I would have agreed with that earlier in the season. But I have noticed a change in the way that Poch is deploying the 3 at the back. When he does use it these days Sanchez is the middle man ( the man with pace ) to cover runs in and behind. And Toby and Jan have been give license to move up so instead of a line of three its like a triangle and it allows our midfield to swamp the lesser teams and also have any lone man crowded from behind and on both sides.

What Foyth showed yesterday in that instance was a desire to get back and help the team, whilst Trippier far too often lacks that required desire and will attempt to get back into position while jogging and ball watching, it's infuriating to watch at times.

Defend first, attack second. I like that in a full back :)

That's not a change, Poch has almost always played Sanchez central with Toby and Vert wide of him. Though yesterday he had Sanchez on the right of the 3 to help with Sterling.
