Josh Onomah

Definitely agree with what Chich said in the transfer thread about him needing a PL loan next year (if he’s not brought back in)

He can't pass, he can't dribble, he can't tackle, he barely runs, he doesn't release the ball quickly enough, he gets caught in possession a lot, he seems slow (whether that's just because he doesn't run or isn't very fast), he barely ever tracks back and he seems like he generally can't be arsed. It doesn't matter whether he's played in position or not, these are basic skills that good players should be able to perform no matter where they're playing, and if he did do that stuff well you could probably forgive him for being played out of position, but he doesn't and I can't see any position on the pitch where he'd excel considering his performances with us.

Perhaps one of the most egregious things he does for me is that whenever he receives the ball, he has to trap it under his boot and then take a second or two to assess the play in front of him before moving. It slows our play down so much and takes any sting out of our attacks, he needs to realise he can't take that sort of time in senior football. It reminds me of two of our own youth players; Grealish a couple of seasons ago would do the same thing, but the saving grace was he could win a free kick instead of getting dispossessed, and now he's kicked that habit and is by far our best and most dangerous player, his head is on a swivel and his touches are always into space which helps us break at speed and with purpose. The other player is Nathan Delfouneso, a striker, who would always take a second or two before chasing down through balls and would always react a second too late. He plays for Blackpool in League 1 now.

I hope Onomah proves me wrong in the run in, and if he can put in the drive and effort that Grealish has put in recently, I'm sure he can become a decent player, but worryingly he seems to have gotten worse throughout the season when other players in the squad have come on leaps and bounds, ans I just don't see him becoming a Premier League player, but then again I've been wrong about Spurs players before.

Thanks for posting that. As disappointing as that is to read I hope he’s given a chance somewhere else if only to see if it is just a “bad fit” at Villa

Weird and disappointing to read - really seems like there must be something seriously flawed with his mentality / mindset? He looks so quality for the youth team.

Poch was right on this one - he should have stayed in our squad. Considering even Sissy has had gametime at CM, there would have been opportunity for him with us.

Sending him to a dinosaur like Bruce, with a dressing room containing Terry, was always going to be bad news.

Surely part of loaning young players out is to see how they manage being out of their comfort zone? Looking at the points raised about lack of awareness and workrate don't reflect well on him, anyone should be able to try.

Bad advice can pretty much permanently ruin a player. Defoe for example never recovered from the work SGE did with him

Onomah isn't really the type of player to be doing a Lamela-esque high press from AM, I can see why he would struggle with that. He's better dictating things from deep, using his physicality to create space.

He was pressing early in the season. I remember reading on one Villa forum how it was frustrating because he was the only Villa player doing it. His work rate wasn't an issue then.

I reckon it's more an attitude thing than ability. Bruce has played him out of position more often than not. We know Onomah can pass and he can dribble, but not like a winger.

He was getting easily dispossessed for us though, which hasn't improved it seems.

In the summer he did all the things the villa fans say that he cannot do. That for me just reinforces the idea that it's a mentality/attitude thing.

You maybe right, but I can't see him making an impression with us unless he's prepared to fight for a place which will mean doing thinks he doesn't fancy doing. As a youth player he looked outstanding now he looks lost and needs to wake up or it will be too late.

Of course that is important. I just don't think Dembele would perform particularly well doing Lamela's role, no matter how hard he tried; and that's what Onomah is being asked to do.

You're right Onomah will not be the same type as Lamela, but he will never be anywhere near Dembele in midfield until he realises he needs to impose himself, he looks and plays like a reserve, tough luck if you can't play where you want, that's what happens when you're young and can't prove to the boss that you can do the job YOU want.

Ignoring Onomah's merits, Poch hasn't shown himself to be someone to throw youngsters in from the start unless there are no other options. I don't therefore believe that Onomah would have got much more than ad-hoc sub appearances like last year, in which case a loan should have got him far more game time and a chance to step up to senior football. You can debate the club which he was loaned to, but getting someone out to what is a massive club by Championship standards doesnt intuitively seem like a bad thing to do to me

This must be a joke. They must be thinking to try to wreck his rep so we sell him on the cheap. Imagine that Grealish is being rated as putting in more of an effort than him. I def think we should get Onomah out of there before he is further wrecked.

I don't think so mate, you can go read the full thread.

If I take away the overreaction & hype from both sides, seems Onamah has the same issue he has with us. I struggle to describe it as it obvious he has ability, but to me, it seems he often lacks urgency.

It's sad (but not unusual with young players), particularly so as he would have seen the effort players like Kane & Mason put in and the rewards reaped.

Winks has played 33 games last season, 22 this (despite injuries). That wasn't forced by lack of options, and Winks is only a year older/ahead of Onomah.

My particular concern with Villa is that Bruce is a dinosaur. If Onomah had gone to a Warburton or Jackett club (I know neither were in the right club setup at that particular moment in time), I'd've had more confidence.

But when it's Dembele, it's called composure.

People often say, if Poch could've had Dembele when he was in his early 20s, imagine what a player he would have become. For me that is Onomah now.

Its going slightly off-topic but Winks got his opportunity because we were short in that area, and then he happened to grab it and hasn't looked back since. None of us can obviously say how quickly Winks might have got that opportunity otherwise. Poch seems to bring young players in very slowly, or when there's no other option (see KWP this season - started v Saudi Sportswashing Machine but not much since), rather than looking for chances to blood them (e.g. putting 2-3 kids on the bench in our FA Cup games so far)

Having seen Onomah for Spurs and reading the complaints of Villa fans, the problem isn't Bruce.
