Jose Mourinho - SACKED

Which of the Norwich or Soton players would you swop for ours? Both teams harried the hell out of us and we couldn't cope. Not the first time that has happened but our prima donnas need to learn that they must compete first before they can play.

Without wanting to butt in, the reason that Norwich and Southampton looked better on the ball is that we dont press the opposition like we used to, and like how they did to us. We tend to sit back now and wait for teams to come to us

When I did the sums a while back I had ya having the capacity to spend £100m a season without a problem and capacity for £50m more dependant on wages and outgoings

the Lo Celso deal is a buy now pay later option isn’t it so that could come from next years money
In which case we’ll have only what? £60 million net to spend combing Jan and the summer? We’d better be prepared to slip back into the midfield pack if that’s the case.

I don't see a general lazy shiftyness, especially under Mourinho. I see almost confusion or muddled rushed play.
They look like their 'runnin around a bit' but with little idea as to why?
I very much see a laziness.... look at Moura not bothering to track his opposite number’s run after about 20 mins yesterday giving them the spare man at the back post for the header.

From the BBC repots
SCBC
Possession 59%
Shots 11 (vs 12)
On Target 5 (vs 3)
Corners 9 (vs 6)

Norwich
Possession 59%
Shots 15 (vs 5)
On Target 7 (vs 2)
Corners 6 (vs 4)

I think the Norwich game started badly, but we finished strong. However that bad start is clouding the judgement a bit.

SCBC definitely looked more up for it, more aggressive, and we were definitely poor by comparison. However, we still had more possession, more shots on target, only 1 less shot over all, more corners - and didnt offer them much in the way of genuine opportunities.

We arent playing well, but I think how bad we are doing is somewhat over stated.

Going back a little further

Brighton
Possession 46%
Shots 11 (vs 11)
On Target 5 (vs 5)
Corners 2 (vs 9)

A very even game reflected in the performance I think

Chelsea
Possession 56%
Shots 13 (vs 5)
On Target 3 (vs 1)
Corners 5 (vs 3)

Actually much better than I thought
Teams will generally always have more possession when behind in games.

Of those games you listed I thought we actually played OK against Norwich and were a little unlucky. We were dire against Chelsea and Southampton though. Brighton we got away with one. They deserved a draw I thought.

It’s literally the reason he was hired though, to get more out of these players. He is not someone that you hire and wait so that the pieces of his long term vision fall in to place. He picks on opponents weaknesses and gets results. Otherwise he isn’t doing anything we couldn’t already do.

I think the issues under Jose are the issues that we had at the start of the reason. I think this group has struggled to adapt to a different style of play. They were no longer able to run as hard as they needed and haven’t been able to adapt to different styles. To the points around these players not winning enough of the second balls, I think that is right. And it’s something that we see regardless of which style we are using.

Seeing the goal we conceded against Sheffield United at home. We were playing deeper and we were standing off. It’s a fine, feasible strategy. But they scored a relatively simple goal because I think our players just right now lack a bit of that park to win the 1 v 1s that they need to win. And regardless of the system, whether you are pressing high or dropping deeper, you need to win them. I think Poch’s attempt to play a diamond and the general idea of less pressing was to respond to the fact that these players didn’t want / couldn’t run as much as they have done in the past. And Jose’s style isn’t built on as much pressing anyway - his hire is a recognition of the fact that this squad should be older and wiser and able to play a game that is about containing space in different areas of the pitch.

But I don’t think anything is particularly working. We were horrendous against Chelsea, we created nothing of note at Southampton and we’re patting ourselves on the back for ‘even’ games against bottom of the league Norwich and bottom half Brighton at home. Something needs to improve big time, and quickly. Right now I don’t see any tangible improvement. I see a different style in possession, but I think these players have been given the chance to play a bunch of different styles and none of them are working. I think they may just be done as a group. Hope I’m wrong.

I think the players do still have the hard running in them, they just don't want to.
For me they have decided that it's too hard work to win here, whereas if they get a move they could win and have a certain amount of coasting.
It's hilarious watching posters claim we have improved, we may do not have regressed, but we sure as hell haven't improved.

So we should have just stuck with Poch then?

For me, this is why it gets tough to discuss these things with any rationale.

To be clear.
There are some (like me) who feel it is a shame and mistake that the board and Levy did not offer Poch the support and action he asked for starting two years ago, and feel it is a shame and mistake that the situation ended up rotten.
I think we can all agree it was rotten at the end.
I think it is clear that the problems lie very much with the squad composition.
I sincerely hope Mourinho is given everything HE needs to do the job HE wants to do.
I am sceptical that Levy fully comprehends the might and power of Mourinho, an undoubted legend in football management who has altered his ways for no-one.

That is the major point I see being made.

I personally preferred Poch as a human being, and am already embarrassed to see and hear the antics yesterday BUT he has my FULL support because be manages MY club who I want to succeed.

This just shows what rubbish stats can be though mate. We did not create clear chances a plenty against Soton. And Chelsea? It was brick! Again (and to beat the drum) I hope Mourinho gets what he needs when he needs it.

For Brighton and Chelsea, those are the opposition stats, not ours.
Which is probably why the Chelsea game looks much better than you thought!

don’t disagree with any of that. For whatever reason, I think these players are done here and the dynamic of the squad needs shaking up.

we’re actually in the rubbish position of a load of players feeling like they have no more to give here, and players like N’Dombele who are probably wondering why the hell they joined. And this is all / a lot probably quite subconscious and not deliberately trying to throw the towel in, but regardless of more long balls or less, I think the Southampton game looked the same as anything under Poch at the end. It’s not like we were getting picked apart repeatedly, there was not a complete stodginess about it all, there was no plan, there seems to be nothing that can meld these players together into a consistently winning machine.

It’s not only obvious stuff like that either. It’s general bustling between players and making life difficult for them. Lamela did it when he came on, as he always does.

Those stats are the wrong way round.
There was definitely just the one shot on target. It got the biggest (ironic) cheer of the game from those left in the ground by that time.

Ah ha! That’s why I thought the stats were rubbish and did not reflect what I saw us (not) do!!!

Did we really have 3 shots on target against Chelsea? I only remember one well into injury time when the game was over as a contest?

Yep - my bad - Sorry chaps

Though I think the point stands - impressions arent always accurate. I think we have done better than people think for the most part, though Chelsea was indeed a bad one.
