Joao Palhinha

Having a specialist defensive player in midfield is a good thing re squad options, even if on the ball he's possibly not at the level to be starting week in week out, we will have plenty of tough games where you need to be hard to beat first and foremost - away to the top 6, away games in Europe etc beefing up that side of our game is a good route to getting more points on the board

His short-passing is actually really good (high percentage of accomplishment) and I think he will allow the likes of Bergy to develop into deep lying carries/playmakers. The insurance of a player like Palhinha will help us across the board, especially if we do something stupid again in this window and decide not to addressn the left-side of defence and end up using 'utility players'...but I think his role will be catalytic for our younger creative talent.

Another big piece with this (probable) signing is having a leader in the side could be crucial. Our most senior 'leaders' are not actual leadership material. Palhinha looks to dominate his midfield. He leads from the middle!

I'd imagine he's also a good guy to have around the dressing room too.

He is experienced
And he knows the league
And it’s a loan
Not really anything there that anyone can complain about

So many games last season we looked naive. Quite a young side. And we never saw Son or Romero step in and play that role of leader, really. We were prone to be hustled. We looked totally different in the game today, far more combative and primed. But it was just a friendly. Frank will prepare the side to be more savvy on the pitch, but there are times you want a player who can read the momentum in a game. Make a tatical foul. Help the team reset. We really miss having a couple of smart older players like that. Hopefully Palhinha brings that.

Bissouma lacks awareness - of what is around him on the pitch - and of how to game things or get wins over the line. Palhinha I hope is more savvy.
