João Palhinha

He was Jose's first summer signing. If he was as bad as being implied then him and Conte most certainly would have prioritised a replacement for the first team. He was a mainstay for four seasons and got flogged to death so obviously his performances were going to be affected at times. Yes we can and do have better now, but Hojberg was not close to being one of our worst midfielders over the past 30 years....

He was seen as a 14m bargain signing and I maintain, had zero competition, if we were backing Jose with 30/40m for players he isn't picking him up IMO.

Anyway as I said, he has gone, thankfully, we move on. COYS

Never mind the PEH comparisons, reading online about signing Palhinha I thought we were getting a Michael Brown regen.

His profile is perfect for us now as his ability to break up play frees up others. Not to take it back to the Ange discourse but I think if we’d signed him last season it wouldn’t have worked as well as it has thus far. As shown with the line up against Burnley he’d not be as effective against teams when we have the majority of possession. This is the benefit of TF in charge, hell cut his cloth to suit his needs

Can we stop beating previous players due to having a nice shiny new toy. PEH always made an effort. He didn’t kick up a stink and was always professional.

This new boy is mint.

Amazing isn't it. Anyone doing well for a game or two is a reason to bring up players in the same position you just feel like slagging off. PEH was never an out and out 6 anyways tbh.

But it's not a coincidence that now Palhinha comes in and suddenly our midfield looks a whole lot better as a result. In fairness I didn't see the Burnley game but Gray can't have done too badly without Palhinha next to him, I didn't hear much about his performance. The risk is if our Bayern Munich loanee picks up a long term injury early on. I guess it depends what happens with Bissouma..

It's more the people piling mate it's a fair pun. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and the main thing is that we're in a good place with midfield in the here and now!

I appreciate it's still early days on the signing, nonetheless the club has made a smart move and upgrading our first XI for the season in position we badly needed.

Yeh agree............

One swallow does not make a spring, nor one fine day...
This may be true. But the performance he put in against City is kind of what he does. It's what he's been doing for years anyway. And that day for sure was a fine day. Looks likely that there are more fine days to come. No real reason to think he won't be putting in performances like that with regularity from what I can understand?

Haha it's clear he is a step up on PEH and a fantastic signing. But for balance let's see how good he would look if he was flogged to death like PEH was. Palhinha got a nice little weeks rest, a luxury PEH never got because he actually had the ability to stay constantly fit,,,,
I think he'll get selective rest to start with (like Burnley) depending on opponent, and hopefully that sees off enforced rest as the games pile up.

As we grow and become more confident they'll be games we can easily cope without him. And that's even if bissouma drops of the radar

Hopefully Gray can continue building on a decent start against Burnley and make himself a real option there.

For me, Frank is proving how important a signing he was for our club. Didn't see the game, but catching up with the posts tell me that our midfielders are just getting compliments week after week. This week I read some great posts about Bents, Pal and Bergval within 24 hours of each other. Obviously Sarr has been getting plaudits for weeks.

It feels like Frank has come in, unscrambled some heads and reprogrammed them. His expectations on them are very realistic and pragmatic. He is setting them up for success in their positions.
