Jan Vertonghen

Sherwood had the guy right, he is not a team player. Sad to say it, but we should sell

Man Utd to move for Spurs star Jan Vertonghen if £47m Mats Hummels swoop FAILS

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Louis van Gaal is keeping tabs on Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen ahead of a potential £18m January swoop.

That will definitely shore up a leaky defence.

It's like the late night, horny drunk man tactic: If the hottest girls don't want you, go for whoever fancies a shag.

Looking at RedCafe, most of them think he's class.

Just what they need to field an entire XI of left footers as well.

My new favourite username. Welcome.

It's as good as it's going to get......

On the news about United wanting him I wouldn't sell on two levels:

1: despite all his faults, I think he is our best defender - granted there isn't much competition at the moment

2: we shouldn't sell to united, they are a direct rival.

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen is considering his future over fears regarding his role in Mauricio Pochettino's plans.

The Belgian has established the reputation of being one of the Premier League's best defenders since arriving from Ajax in 2012.

But he has struggled under Pochettino and is no longer an automatic choice for Spurs.

And his frustration has led Vertonghen to weigh up his potential options away from White Hart Lane.

Sources have also told Sportsmail that the relationship between Pochettino and Vertonghen isn't what it could be, contributing to the Belgian's current mindset.

The defender is under no immediate rush to leave north London, but would find it hard to turn down a Champions League side.

Despite not being an automatic choice, Spurs are unlikely to entertain offers for Vertonghen in January.

Spurs are under little pressure to sell Vertonghen given his current deal expires in 2018.

I just think he's completely un motivated and clearly mentally weak, if he moved I reckon you'd see the vertonghen that we saw in the first season. On current form, I agree he is playing **** though.

This bit amazes me. Not only are current fees ridiculously high but as much as I think Hummels is a decent defender in no way is he worth almost triple what Jan is, so if they want him then they have to pay over the top for him too!

That's conjecture. I feel like Berbatov and Ade before him, he suffers because of perceptions about his 'body language', rather than because he's any worse in those aspects than anyone else.

Our whole squad was mentally destroyed by last season and Poch has got a lot of work on to repair the damage done. Other than Mason, Kane and Chadli, there's almost no one in our squad who you'd say is mentally at the top of their game at the moment.

In respect to Verts, remember he missed pre-season and has been thrown in with a combination of a shot Kaboul, an off-the-pace Fazio, a rookie out-of-position RB, and a struggling DM. And we've only played 11 games so far.

Basically I think it's premature to write him off, as I'm sure once the team gels a bit more, he'll come back to strength too.

Agree with a lot of that, but when you list the deficiencies of the CBs he has partnered this season you have to question why is he not being selected consistently....

He's still haunted by Sherwood according to the Belgian press...

Belgian newspaper HLN on Friday cover British newspaper claims of Manchester United interest in a move for Jan Vertonghen.

...The ghost of Tim Sherwood is still an issue. HLN explain that Vertonghen is still haunted by Sherwood questioning his mentality. The newspaper say Sherwood made a 'mess' of the Tottenham job and not everything since that time has been cleared up. Vertonghen is stated as being a perfectionist and if everything isn't as he feels it should be, and he sees no way to improve things, then an exit could be on the cards.

He's not good enough for United IMO. I know United are currently fairly ****e at the back and have a rather amusing long list of injuries but the reality of it is that he is not the calibre of player they should be targeting. Utd need to be aiming higher if they want to climb back to the top of the pile.

I'm not writing him off yet. His attitude is questionable to say the least at times, but he's still a better defender than Fazio, Chiriches, Kaboul etc.

I have to disagree on that. He has no outstanding attributes as a defender. Slow, poor attitude, can't organise. A player that likes to coast by on natural ability alone, but gets shown up when the team as a whole isn't playing well.

I think if every player is fighting tooth and nail and he has a good midfield shielding him, he too will fight tooth and nail and will be a brilliant signing for Utd.

But if Utd stuff their team full of flair players and leave him exposed, he will get the hump and sulk as things won't go his way, just like at Spurs.
