James Maddison

Maddison has Johnson wanting passes in behind to run onto, Sonny who does best with passes in behind and not to feet, plus Udogie and Porro constantly looking to overload and provide further options. Different systems obviously, but there are options for him, and when he doesn't have them, I don't think he does enough to invite/create situations either by drawing fouls or taking people on. I think he has been greatly hampered by not having Romero behind him, that's for sure, but Gray is very very good on the ball too. For me, he still ends up getting drawn deep to 'get involved' without knowing what that involvement is for beyond just getting on the ball. If he's dropping, whoi's HIS option?
Fans love making excuses for why their favourite player is unable to do something due to someone else not being available or helping them. What about the player themselves taking some responsibility and doing what they can for themselves? Such a backwards way of looking and thinks and ultimately just a haven for excuses and failure.

As he has shown during his playing days he knows what to say to the media, pity his performances ON the field leave a LOT to be desired. I know some will disagree but i am hoping he will be one of the first out of the door this summer.

A great player. Unfortunately it’s only for around 25% of the matches he plays in, and he’s injury prone.

We can upgrade, but I’m not sure it’ll be a priority this summer.

I agree on his day he can be a very good player but those days do not happen very often imo. Been the same everywhere he has been. Our M/F is so poor imo and it needs a lot of work this summer.

He's not a great player, he's an ok one. To some extent I think the criticism he's been receiving is a little unfair. The expectations upon him are way higher than his actual ability level so he's never really gonna live up to those expectations. He's just not that calibre of player and never has been.

I said at the time we were linked that if we signed him I'd be a little underwhelmed and tbf he initially exceeded my previous view of him as a player but he's now settled back down to what I think is a fairish representation of him.

His first instinct is look for son, then wait until son makes a run and by then it's too late.
I can't figure if it's a left side thing or keeping in with Son because he's the captain.

That's the way we play though right? Get the ball to the wide players > get balls in to the box from wide. Maddison plays left center so will be looking primarily to play out to the left (Son) whoever plays right center will be doing the same to whoever is playing right wing. A lot of what Maddison does will be dictated by how Son is playing - if Son was quicker to make the right runs Maddison looks better as his passing then leads to more attacking threat.

We've seen the training clips showing the wide players being instructed to aim for a certain space with the onus then on other players to be attacking those spaces - I'd imagine our setup places similar instruction to find the wide players as a priority earlier in the phase of play.

I remember in that early part of last season Maddison looked a revelation - taking charge, popping up all over the pitch dictating play, progressing the ball in all directions, he looked class - something has changed as time has gone on regarding what he tries to do with the ball - is that of his own choosing or how he is being instructed to play?

He's certainly a different player from when he first arrived, at peak "Angeball" they looked like different players. He passing it all over the pitch then.
I find it difficult to believe that the manager changed that. Why would he.
The fragility of "Angeball" has been exposed and IMHO that is difference, loss of confidence in what they are doing. The players don't believe anymore, don't blame them that wasn't sustainable.
The speed of our play, passing and the risks we were taken have all gone, everything is safe with no one taking a chance.
I have several Celtic supporting mates who say that what we play is not recognisable to his system at Celtic, so something isn't working and his inability to fix after this long is a problem that will/has cost him his job.

I am wondering if he is carrying some sort of systemic injury? He is rarely able to play 65 minutes, let alone 90?

I remember Maddison pre Chelsea game injury as an explosive player, when he got the ball he could burst in to space and get away from the opposition. I remember the way he turned Saka for Sons goal in the derby, and those movements used to happen a couple of times per game.

Post injury he’s just so damn slow and soft, getting caught and falling over. Even the way he passes the ball is slow, the way he exaggerate the body movement for it.

Wonder if it’s age, passion or something other that makes him not get back to fitness? I mean a lot of time has passed since his return

I hope I'm wrong, but I saw some signs with Solanke as well after his injury. He looked lethargic and a yard slower against Chelsea. I even mooted that he might be patched up and carrying a niggle.

I really hope Dom finds the back of the net today. It is what he needs most.

We're wired to be safety first at core. For Ange's system to work it has to show that losing the ball, not scoring doesn't result in the opposition going down the other end and scoring. At Celtic this was the case due to a lower standard of opposition. Here we're getting dingdonged.
Eventually this will lead to less risk taking, overthinking etc. Nobody wants to be the guy that made the brick pass that lead to a goal. When it happens for two seasons players will just stop posting that way subconsciously. It's up to the manager to put belief back in the system by showing that it can support them when they need it (defensively). He has failed to do this.
