James Maddison

The amount of times he looked off to his left for a runner to play in and there was no-one grrrrrrr...

What a waste playing Johnson on the left wing, might as well play Kulusevski there (if Werner and Son both unable to start the match) so at least he could cross with his favoured foot for Brennan to ghost onto at far post like he’s good at.

Heck, maybe even try Solanke out there (like Richarlison) so Lankshear can get a few minutes up front.

Agreed. It was a huge error. I am not sure I understood it. Have to say I did not think the subs worked either. For me, it had to be Werner on, Johnson right, and Maddison as the playmaker. I'd have taken Deki off last night and relied on Sarr powering transitions/quick progressions to Werner and Johnson. The space was there to exploit. Instead we brought Sonny on, took off the lungs of Sarr, and ended up slowing things up and eventually clogging ourselves up (all this while knowing we simply don't have the same quality playing out from the back with Forster, Radu and whoever's LCB in any particular half of football)...

But he looks, takes a touch, has another look, takes another touch and then sometimes plays the pass, if he hasn't either been tackled or played the ball backwards.

I think the last few games he has actually been much much better in that regard. He got whacked at least 6 times tonight, three of them should've been yellow cards. He is putting himself on the line currently. I had no real issues at all with him today TBH in terms of effort.
Agreed. Really good from the start of both halves when the team was playing with energy and he had options.

When things fell apart that's not on him. He'd have to be Messi to maybe prevent that.

I have been very frustrated with him this season, but tonight I felt he was actually pretty blameless as there simply wasn't any shape or smart movement ahead all too often.

I agree he has been better in the last few games and since he spent time on the bench. But more long term he has been inconsistent and for me is not captain material. Just because he is popular doesn't mean he should be captain. He should be left to concentrate on himself and get that consistency and fight every game.

I agree with that. Davies for me all day. Well, not now given injury, etc...

Certainly wasn't his worst game, but as a senior player who should be fresher than most he should be doing better.

Pundits say that Spurs only play well when Madders plays well, so perhaps most teams have a focus on shutting him down, hence he looks pony sometimes.

He needs space and he needs the other players to "get" him

We play 4-3-3 (simplistically stating)
The midfield 3 is not flat, can be 2 forward or 2 sitting
It works when either he is one of the two up front and makes runs becoming the goal threat, or he is one of the sitting becoming the pass before the assist.

When we fudge up is when we either setup where there is no space (early on, he and Deki would be in same space), or there is no one for him to pass it to. He is also fouled a fudging lot

Son, Johnson, Maddison all need the system to give them space to work/run into, very different from Deki, Solanke, Bentancur, who for me are quite comfortable/still effective in congested spaces, turning into players.

That’s because the latter have much better control of the ball

He does get fouled a lot and refs let a lot go as well. Last night he was pulled down when scoring his second and in the 2nd half he put in a cross and was clattered after the ball which ref thought was ok.

It's a big problem, if he got the same level of calls as say Saka/Grealish traditionally had, we would either have a lot more freekicks or would be playing pretty often against 10 men

Interesting. I think I see it almost exactly opposite of that on Maddison.

All players benefit from having space of course, but to me Maddison is amongst our best players in congested spaces from how I see it.

That's part of why he gets fouled so much.

I think he's good when he drives forwards and not when he's turning in circles and passing it sideways and backwards.

He seems to do the latter more than the former, without any rhyme or reason why, apart from that he's better when he's getting played in and then can play his pass or dribble. He needs someone to water carry for him really, a Modric or Dembele type to play the pass so he can then play the pass, rather than him starting the attacks.

His two best performances of the season were some combination of him spraying it around from the 6 position (space) or when he and Deki are on opposite sides up front and he's allowed to make runs (space).

Not saying he can't play in congestion, but he runs the game when given that space
