This system is not getting the best out of either Kane or Rooney.
What is clear is that England really do lack a creative playmaker in the middle. Delph and Henderson together are dishwater dull.

surely we wouldn't really play a midfield of jones, henderson and delph in a real match would we?
 
no-one could've seen this coming: england beat 7 part time teams consisting of pig farmers and waiters - built up as genuine contenders to win the universe cup 2016.

England play against average team of professional footballers and lose whilst barely having a shot - reality.

I'd never ever back england to beat a holland-germany-france-italy-brazil-argentina-portugal type side because his always happens.

Read people saying italys midfield looked dreadful, worst team for 20 years etc. It was obvious this would happen.

Like I say, even Woy wouldn't play Jones in midfield in a competitive match, surely.
 
In fairness his hands have been tied a touch by withdrawals, etc, but he really needs to figure out how to get more out of the attacking players. He should got to Henderson and Mason as the platform with Walnut, Rooney, Townsend as the three behind Kane. Of course, with Carrick going on now, let's make that Mason and Carrick!
 
Well that was worth watching. Any chance we'll get someone on the pitch that can pass the ball, Henderson, Delph and Jones have been abysmal. Carrick may help.

Yeah the withdrawals must be annoying. Still hard to justify Jones in midfield though in an international team.

It's always the biggest names/those from the biggest clubs that play instead of a team that compliment each other. Why change that now?
 
Not sure I could ever call one of our games (a Spurs game) turgid after watching this. The midfield are going nowhere and Kane is getting no joy at all from that inside right channel. I'd love to see Mason on for Delph, but in all honesty I don't think Hodgson will be too positive with his changes. We could really do with seeing a change of system because the 5 man midfield they have is suffocating us.
 
England are playing into Italy's hands, I think. Italy have three centre backs, two deep midfielders in front of them, there is no way England is gonna find a way through centrally unless they come up with something special (and that looks unlikely), so at least get the ball wide and put some crosses in.

Instead England have a diamond in midfield, no width, and the full backs rarely come forward. I have to say it's a bit baffling that they play that way when it's obvious that the spaces are in the wide areas. Play 4-2-3-1 instead. Walcott on the right (he is useless as a striker against a team that defends deeply). Rooney behind Kane. Take Delph off and get someone on who can provide some width on the left, even if it is Townsend. And get the full backs forward more.
