I often wondered whether his curiously old and “robustly rounded” figure as a youth (not to mention his “older” face) led to his grannytraction? In fact, much like African players are accused of lying about their age in their passports, isn’t it true that residents of Croxteth like to steal a few years on theirs if possible? Could Rooney actually be 47 right now???

Dier for me did his defensive duties well, but I cringed at some of his first touches tonight. The ball just seemed to sit up every time he took a first touch and in the league, he'd be pressed instantly off of some of those. Barkley and Sterling were both guilty of holding on to the ball at times.

Diers been getting criticised again after a win... a very good win too against a side where his opposite number is currently world player of the year and was quite innefective

Dier had one bad pass that almost cost him

He was also the only midfield coming back to cover when they scored whilst the actual defenders were all
Over the place

We play miles better with him on the pitch as he screens the defence and allows tha attackers to play

I also read afterwards that Barkley now has progressed passed Alli... I heard Lingaard had too last season. Alli came on and we scored 2 goals. That’s more than enough for me to highlight his contribution as being more effective

I'm sure I saw that Dier had a 95+% pass completion rate.

Looked very solid again to me - especially for someone with Delph and Barkley treading on his toes for 60 minutes.
 
I feel a lot of critics of Dier dont understand what he does for the team and just watch the ball, it comes from either never playing the game or only watch on tv, within a team you need to create and cover space as well as pass, shoot and dribble. He made mistakes and luckily we had Martin Tyler there to remind us, must have been a big disappointment when Kane created and scored as he has to start "he's not scored since..." from a new point.

Guilty as charged there. I'm usually too emotionally invested in our matches to really be able to properly analyse how we play at the same time (as well as tactically somewhat inept). I recognise that Dier is an important player for us, but would also say that he hasn't been as good as he used to be on the ball this season as he has been before. But that goes for pretty much the entire team bar Sissoko this season so far.

Maybe part of the issue is Alli and Eriksen being out. They are so technically good that they can turn a bad pass into a good one and will also show for a ball where others may not. Winks and Dembele fall into this class too. Luka was the master of this though - lost count of the number of times I saw someone give him the ball by the left touchline when he had at least a man on and he’d wriggle out of it and play a progressive pass.

Modric was just pure class. He was especially good at being prepared before receiving the ball, always knowing where opponents and team mates were, always one step ahead, ready to turn the right way when receiving the ball, setting himself up for the right pass. Brilliant, brilliant player that was a joy to watch in a Spurs shirt. Can't believe we once had him.

There was a point where I was hoping we might get him back, then the Madrid fans finally took their eyes of Ronaldo and he goes and bloody stars in the World Cup!

Well said.

For me it was actually Dele rather than Lingard who made the real difference when he came on. He immediately started plugging holes all over the park as well as creating clear openings for our attackers in and around Croatias' box. But of course it was Lingard who cleared off the line - although it looked to me like Pickford might have gotten to the ball anyway if he hadn't - and it was Lingard who ensured Kane's effort crossed the line for England's equaliser with a simple tap-in - although that too looked like it might not have needed his intervention.

But because it was Lingard on the end of those two incidents it's he who gets awarded most of the credit for turning the game England's way whilst Dele hardly gets a mention.

Indeed.

Lingard was really good, and Sancho got to have some fun too and looks promising, but they don't get to do what they did unless Dele plays a "role" and sacrifices things he can do in his sleep (setup Kane, drift into the box undetected and score goals, those sorts of things) in order to allows an extra player with genuine creative intelligence and speed of thought who is also disciplined enough to do a job! He is so underrated by some critics and pundits it makes me grimace!
 
Dele suffers from peoples expectations he is an AM, a goalscorer, and not "a midfielder".

He is a fudging good midfielder, with a natural intelligence and ability to make things tick and make things happen (rare to get both in a player).

In the WC I thought he was superb, and yet nobody gave him the credit he clearly deserved. In a midfield with brainless Linguard and Hendersen he actually made things look competent between them, player of the tournament for me!
 
Does Nations League prove that England are contenders to win Euro 2020?

Recent success has got England fans excited - so are Gareth Southgate's side realistically capable of winning a major tournament?

Southgate says England are "breaking new barriers" as they near the end of a year that brought a first World Cup semi-final appearance since 1990, and qualification for the Nations League finals.

In 2013, former FA chairman Greg Dyke said England should aim to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and win the World Cup in 2022.

Not many people took him seriously - but could the next European Championship prove to be the next broken barrier for England? Here are a few reasons why the answer may be yes.

It will be like a home tournament

Euro 2020 will be played across 12 countries and the good news for England is that Wembley will host the semi-finals and the final.

The last time that happened was in 1996, when England hosted the whole tournament and reached the last four, losing on penalties to Germany. And before that? The 1966 World Cup, when England won the trophy.

In two years' time, Wembley will host seven games, including at least two of England's group matches if they qualify.

The Three Lions have won 15 of their past 16 competitive matches at Wembley - a record stretching back to 2007 - with their only defeat coming against Spain in September.

In addition, teams can set up their headquarters wherever they want during the tournament, meaning England can be based at St George's Park and will not have to do as much travelling.

And there seems to be no better time for England to play in front of their own fans, with Wembley rocking during Sunday's dramatic 2-1 Nations League win over Croatia.

"The biggest thing is the connection with the fans - I haven't seen the new Wembley like that," said Southgate after beating the 2018 World Cup runners-up.

"The way it feels with the fans is special. It's giving us the energy to try to go on and break new barriers all the time."

So will England's new "connection" with the fans play a big part in 2020?
