I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Why now is the wrong time for Tottenham to discard Erik Lamela after report outlines club's intention to sell

The Times reported this morning that Spurs are ready to listen to offers for Erik Lamela, after the player and club shared a disagreement regarding the treatment for the Argentine's ongoing injury problems.

The 25-year-old has struggled to establish himself since making his big money move to White Hart Lane from Roma in 2013, and is still yet to show the Tottenham faithful what he is truly capable of on a consistent enough basis.

But the question has to be asked, are Spurs about to make a big mistake by discarding Lamela at the wring time?

The mercurial forward has not featured for Mauricio Pochettino's men since late October in an EFL Cup tie against Liverpool.

And there cannot be too many clubs who would be willing to take a risk on Lamela, especially with so much uncertainty surrounding his fitness.

Tottenham would certainly not be able to get anywhere near the £26 million that they paid for his services three-and-a-half years ago.

Obviously, it is only those inside the ropes of the club and Lamela's inner-circle who are privy to the full extent of the former River Plate man's problems.

But there is a case to be made for Spurs to stick by him through the worst of his trouble's in the hope that he can either return to his best, or at least get to playing more regularly, and in turn, increase his value - he is under contract with the club until the summer of 2020 after all.

Lamela's future at Tottenham will surely still depend on whether or not there is a conclusive diagnosis to his fitness problems, and of course whether anyone comes in with what would be deemed as an acceptable offer for his services.

And judging by the way things have gone recently, the latter seems to be like the more likely outcome.

-----------------------------------

The Lamela situation is getting ugly. All these rumours will only stop when he comes back from injury. Surely, it is worth waiting for Lamela even if he only comes back next season.

Our medical team have failed miserably if surgery is required and we have him back pushing to try and get fit by training/rehab.

Sometimes people get issues with their body which don't fit easily treatable medical conventions. I'd suggest Lamela's hip injury is just that. He feels pain, but scans maybe don't identify anything clear. What do you do? In the end the club say, well get on with it, train and see.

He's too good to give up on. Forget this season get him fit over summer and hope for the best next year.

This. So called 'supporters' want to sell a player who, before his injury, was perhaps our most important?

Based on what? A few media reports? How do we know who's to blame for this situation? Who says anyone is to blame and it's not just a freak injury?

I hope we keep him and get the best out of him next season or whenever he may be fit. He's a gifted player and still young, we owe it to ourselves and the player to stick it out.
