Hugo Lloris

I just explained to my 5 year old son what happened ( he is a big spurs fan ) and he said Hugo should not be stripped from being captain and he should play on Monday as we should not let our captain down.

And I’m responding to the people who seem to be implying that the consensus is that it isn’t that bad and that everyone is saying we should flog him in the town centre.
But you said you’d seen « only 1 person say he should lose the captaincy » that is the statement that is being picked up on.

The only circumstances in which I support Lloris losing the captaincy is if Lamela Is getting the armband.

Oh, just switch the two, for Christ's sake. Lloris gets bumped down to vice-captain, and Kane becomes the new captain.

Done - no need for further fuss, and it would formalize what was an emerging transition anyway.

Make no mistake, drink-driving is unforgivably stupid, and I have zero sympathy for anyone who decides to endanger innocent lives by getting behind the wheel when knowingly sloshed. Hugo will get community service, a fine, and will possibly lose the armband, both at Spurs and possibly with the French national team as well.

But that's about it. There's no need for undue public floggings. And a quick transition from him to Kane would be the smoothest, most controlled way we could go about it - with the matter ending there.

I mean, it’s highly fudging pedantic. I’ve just been back through the thread since it was announced and I saw Naija say he should be stripped, and I’ve seen someone else say they would understand if he got stripped. I don’t think I was massively off even on that point.

I think clearly the people saying he should never play for the club again are taking it a bit too far but I don’t see too much wrong with most of the reactions in this thread that are saying what a stupid decision he has made. You say it yourself there, but there are a lot of people saying ‘we don’t know how over the limit he was’ and trying to find other ways of saying it’s not that bad. A guy in his position should nowhere near need to take the risk. One, because he is a footballer that could afford a helicopter to take him home if there was the slightest doubt in his mind that he had gotten himself over the limit. But secondly because he is the captain and supposed to set an example from top to bottom through the club. He will hopefully be fine, as Rooney and Firmino haven’t ruined their careers from the same problem, but it’s almost worse coming from Hugo because the expectations are more with him. He had extra responsibility as captain and someone that is supposed to represent the highest standards of professionalism at the club, and it’s a really shame he has given anyone a reason to doubt him. But this is not withstanding the fact that it is really stupid to take the risk anyway. I don’t think it’s glass housing to say that - I’ve never come close to drink driving because I just don’t take the risk - it’s very easy not to.

Neither have I. I rarely drink full-stop. I have taken keys from friends before. It is stupid to take the risk, but there IS a difference between two glasses of wine with dinner and 5+beers or some shots. The easiest thing would’ve been to stick to mineral water with dinner. But I cannot think of too many French dinners I have attended where a glass of wine was not poured.

I think he made a mistake. An error of judgement as to wine with dinner versus legal limit. I have not seen anything in his past which suggests he is a negligent prick who behaves wrecklessly regardless of others. So I believe it was a mistake. One for which he will be punished because he was caught by the police, thus the right thing to do.

I wouldn’t worry mate.
Hugo Lloris will say no more because he has reacted as a captain caught making such a mistake should and taken full responsibility.

And again, for everyone suddenly so concerned about public welfare, take a look around you every night you are in the pub and be sure to
act if you see someone over the limit. THAT would be, and is, the RIGHT thing to do.

OK we've had a few days to digest this now, and we can all agree that it was Hugo's wife's fault.

I went out today for a few beers and made sure I brought my wife along as dead weight to criticise me, moan about whether I really needed another drink, roll her eyes and drive me home.

So where the hell was Mrs Lloris? We deserve to know.

Seeing the people he was hanging out with that night, I'm going on the conspiracy theory it was a joint, lesser-club stitch-up.
They really dont want us finishing above them again.

IF he was sloshed deserves it.
If he was slightly over the limit the French won't give a flying fudge.

What does a captain actually do?

It's kind of like the lady who opens the door at the Brothel she thinks she is important. But the real important are the tarts that are paraded into meet you while you decide what you want.

here's what I don't get, if i was earning 5m a year, i wouldn't be driving anywhere, I'd have a full time chauffeur on call.

and yes, he should be stripped of captaincy/fined, book thrown, he's a role model and a "public figure".

Firstly that rides over the dressing room dynamics. Lloris is quite a bit older than Kane and the others. For that role as intermediary between Poch and the squad you want someone who is a little detached/aloof from 'the boys'. He's captain now because he's got the most appropriate personality in the dressing room

Secondly I don't think Kane should be our next captain anyway. I'm firmly of the belief that it shouldn't be an attacking player and that Verts and Dier should be in the mix too.

Vertonghen should be in the mix for sure. Not Dier though. Your captain should be one of your best players. Dier wouldn’t even be in our top 5.

The other players seem to consider Kane the captain

Kane seems very close to Poch, they clearly have a good relationship which is important for the behind-the-scenes liaison a captain has to do. He (Kane) would also need to have the respect of his team mates for such a role, which doesn't seem to be in any doubt. He will be the next full time captain I'm sure, whenever that time comes.

It’s solely a ceremonial role, Hugo won’t be any different without the armband and Kane won’t be any different with it, the entire idea is a nonsense.

I’d like to see us officially go down the same route as the Italian national team, give it to the person with the most appearances* (which ironically is probably Hugo right now anyway).

*For Spurs obviously.
