How patriotic are you?

Not really. I do it every once in a while, but getting the skis to fit the weather conditions is a major hassle. The Norwegian cross country team literally spends millions every year doing research on proper ski waxing! No kidding.

It's dull as fudge to watch on TV.
I guess you are not that popular around the water cooler on Monday mornings. So waxing skis is important eh?

Thanks for your perspective on Norway though.

Go back 30/40 years and I'd hazard a guess that 80-90% would say yes. Now I'd guess the same percentage would say no. Very sad.

I'm from Tottenham, London. I'm very proud to be English. I won't go into details as to why the high percentage say no but there are very clear reasons.

I'm currently paying a few quid to go through my family tree and reading about my family goes back to 1830 so far. Mainly in Norwich and surrounding areas and also Rochester, Kent. I'm extremely proud.

I'd say that mainly it's because we now live in a global environment.

We're able to communicate with and meet people from all over the world, which was the reserve of the very rich 30-40 years ago. I talk more often to and have more in common with people on this forum from the other side of the world than I do my neighbours. Location is simply no longer relevant.

I'd add to that I often find myself embarrassed by other brit's, we have a lot of scum in this country that celebrate ignorance

Than you would not be invited to my secret island where I would entertain a bevy of buxom young ladies and have a midget valet with a strangely lethal top hat. I am turning into scara here, next thing I know I will be wearing a cravat.
Sounds like you're confusing your Odd Jobs with your Nick Nacks, and I have no interest in any odd jobs with your nick nacks thank you very much.

Meh, pretty much every one of you is a tw.at, irrespective of country of birth :D

I joined a new company in London recently, sitting with Ethiopian, Pakistani, Venezuelan, Italian, Romanian, French, Spanish and a handful of Brits.

What's the punchline?

The might be something in that you know because I would not imagine someone like me 100 years ago a working class lad would never have met and become friends or had the opportunity to live in different countries. Good point scara, go get yourself some custard.

Got get it for me custardbitch. And don't forget the cherries or I'll leave you in the basement again.

Last time my wife and I were in Spain we spent the week pretending to be French due to the behaviour of most of the English there.

I'd love to do that, could you offer any advice? Should I just wear a stripey jumper and a beret and smoke them smelly cigarettes? All suggestions gratefully received.

Although born and raised in London , I've never felt especially patriotic and when we emigrated 12 years ago I couldn't wait to leave TBH. Upon receiving American citizenship 6 years ago I felt absolutely nothing. We had the big swearing in ceremony, and I was totally unmoved. I mean I like it here well enough and I've tried to watch baseball and light fireworks on July 4th and all that good stuff but it just leaves me cold.

Israel was the only place I lived that I ever got emotional about, but I spent a month there last year and it left me feeling alienated and confused. I just couldn't relate. Funny because I had always planned to retire there. Maybe it's an age thing?

Interesting.

I moved to the land of the stupid 13 years ago, became a citizen when my daughter was born here (well I retain dual citizenship) and love living in this country, except for one thing, the people. Most of my mates are still ex-pats, I love american sports (its very profitable to bet on) and could reel off NBA team players and college "football" scores but I'll never figure out the folk here. I love english humour, english food, the english way of life. How would you explain Only fools and horses to a yank?
July 4th though, I'll be drinking all night and lighting fireworks all over the street at the in-laws' and to be honest I'll probably never live in England again.

I tried, I really tried. I was determined to become an American, and I did, but I'm not, and never will be. Both my kids are as American as apple pie. But, like you I will never figure the folk here out. Like you,I have dual citizenship, and like you 90% of my mates are Ex Pat Brits.

As much as I enjoy the life I have, the weather in Florida, the sheer abundance, and all that implies.I don't think I'll ever truly understand this country. Living in America became much more pleasant for me when I discovered that, like drowning, it became a lot more pleasant when you stopped struggling and just let it happen. I will also all all likelihood never live in England again The stupidity is incredible though, truly amazing, and if I hadn't actually lived it I would never have believed it.

I joined a US Multinational IT company straight out of college. My first and only job!!! Haha
They were looking for a young guy who was willing to work anywhere in the world and did not have any "baggage" (wife, kids, pets etc.)
Spent most of my life working around the world. Apart from the US I worked in England, Scotland, Germany, Finland, Cyprus, UAE, Singapore, Malaysia and many
countries in Africa.
During my travels met my wife an Irish/Welsh international teacher.
At age 57, we decided to take early retirement ( we had saved a lot of money, kids had completed Uni in the US )
Bought a house in Orlando. Didn't like it in the US. Then spent 2 years looking for our dream retirement destination.
Visited and stayed a few months in Dubai, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Malaysia,Australia before finally settling for Kenya.
Bought a one acre beach plot north of Mombasa, Built our villa to our liking and now settled here.

With a lot of traveling, and living in very different countries, we have been exposed to different cultures, food and people.
Therefore, I am not patriotic to ANY country or culture.
Just Spurs, Tusker lager & good food. :)
