Harry Winks

The idea of losing Winks makes me sad. I like him, he's a tidy enough player but, as others have said, I don't think he's quite good enough for where we want to be. Neat and tidy, and he does pass forward a lot more than people think, but he doesn't have the defensive abilities to play deep, and doesn't have the vision (or goal scoring) to play higher up the pitch. Signing Hojbjerg has put Winks a rung down the pecking order.

The Winks who bossed midfield against Real Madrid and Barcelona seems a distant memory. Perhaps another team, another system...

I'm more than happy for him as a squad player, however. Even the best teams need a Nicky Butt around!

Wouldn’t Eric Dier be our Nicky Butt... which makes Winks the equivalent to Darren Fletcher or Robbie Savage!

Guess the chronic injuries have taken their toll and we’ll not see him zipping around like a few years ago and Winks just doesn’t have the physique to be able to boss CMF like Hojbjerg let alone Ndombele.

If Skipp instead replaces Winks then it allows us to replace Sissoko with an overseas player. I was a bit peeved that we didn't match PSV's 9 million euro bid for Toulouse's Sangare. He would've been a good option to take Sissoko's squad place next year. I guess the problem there again was not having the space in the squad for another overseas player right now.

I think the squad now only needs two more players to be pretty much the perfect squad..... A top class centre half and another defensive minded destroyer of a midfield player. Winks, Sissoko and one of Sanchez or Alderweireld can all go to fund those two players. The question is how much we will be able to afford (especially with us having to find the money for Vinicius in Summer 2021).

Didn’t know Sangare went
I think Skipp will be cover for PEH myself
Sissoko and winks are different players that play in the same space but I would assume we would look abroad for a new CM. I think we may look at Milenkovic Savic as he has been linked with us and Jose before abs would be a step up

it’s an area we will address next summer I agree though

I think Skipp comes back in, Sissoko, Winks and probably one of Dele, Lucas, Lamela out ..

Fair point, although Savage put himself about a lot more. You don't get hated by opposition fans unless you're good at what you do. Especially if that's (1) make niggly fouls all match, (2) wind up the opposition, and (3) have stupid flouncy hair.

Good point about the injuries. If not for that bloody water bottle.

So basically Lamela needs to grow his hair and he becomes our Robbie Savage???

That's the problem really, he's not good enough defensively to be the holder and he's often out of position and doesn't track runners very well, he can't really dribble or show a sleight of feet and burst of pace to make some space and he's not creative enough to play as a 10 so I don't really know where he fits in.

I don't think he's an awful players but he's more limited than I hoped - not necessarily a bad thing as long as everyone recognises what he can and can't do and put him in roles or give him instructions to do just that. All clubs need good squad players who don't necessarily give 10/10 performances but can be relied on to do a specific job when needed and I think he can do that.

Yes. At first I thought your post was too negative, but I can see that you do put a positive slant on things at the end.
There are plenty of players that can't do XYZ... but they can do A or B, which is good enough to be an effective squad player.
He is actually a pretty good player but VERY generalist (as opposed to specialist).

He has been upgraded on by Lo Celso and Ndombele. Two £50m+ signings. He's still a very good player, but I struggle to see how he gets into a starting 11 ahead of one of those.

He's still a very good player though. There aren't that many players in our squad where a £50m+ signing wouldn't be an upgrade, though that number is luckily increasing.

We are not going to sell two home grown players in January, it would cost a fortune to replace them. We'll sell Alderweireld before Dier. Lamela has been in excellent form this season.

If we want to challenge in all competitions, especially in a compressed season like this, we will need a strong squad. All of the players that you are calling to be sold in 9 weeks time are reliable squad members and will have a role to play if we are going to win anything this season.
 
We will win things when we fix that defence. Agree about the home grown players.

The defence we have now reminds me of the time we had Gallas and Bassong. Recall that we had Bale, modric, vdv and were far from being good enough.

Now, and like then no one fears our defence at corners and in crowded crosses situation, and will keep attacking with hope of a breakthrough in the 95th min.

Against Lask 2:30 Højbjerg makes a similar mistake to winks. He miscontrolled just outside the box the ball went central and Hart had to make a save. Most of the time it doesn't result in a worldy goal.
