Guglielmo Vicario

Apparently only the 15th Spurs player in PL to play every game in a season

ICYMI…

Guglielmo joins a club of just 12 other players to have played every fixture in a single Premier League season for us since the formation of the league in 1992.

He joins a who's who of goalkeepers to achieve the feat - Ian Walker, Kasey Keller, Paul Robinson, Brad Friedel and Hugo Lloris.

Robbo was the first player to do it twice in the Premier League era - 2005/06 and 2006/07 - and played 131 of his first 135 available matches in the Premier League after joining us in 2004. Since then, Harry Kane (2015/16, 2022/23) and Hugo (2020/21, 2021/22) have also completed multiple ever present campaigns.

In total, 64 different players have completed ever present seasons for us in the Football League/Premier League. Legendary former skipper Steve Perryman leads the way with eight, followed by 1950s title hero Ted Ditchburn with five.

Saw a stat that he is the first Spurs keeper in something like 13 years to complete a season without making at least 1 error leading to a goal.

I can't help what plays on my mind but it was rather odd absolutely laying in to Bergvall for losing the ball when nobody was showing for it, but not saying anything to Romero for leaving Vardy wide open for a fairly crucial moment in the game.

I'm not against players having a word with each other but a bit of consistency doesn't hurt.

I think someone else said the same in the Bergvall thread. Largely agree with that sentiment as new, young players should be eased into the team. I imagine Vicario probably told Bergvall it was something in the heat of the moment.

Either way, I do think it's best for Vicario to try and be calm, which should come from a confidence in his own abilities. I get that no goalkeeper or defense wants to be under pressure, especially if players keep making brain farts. I do think that sometimes nervousness or trepidation can be contagious and bleed out to other players, so for that, we need some huge, immovable zen rocks that don't get fazed.

anyone on the team capable of screaming at him when he makes mistakes?
seen lots lately - passing out to players under pressure, not coming out for the ball in the 6 yard box etc.

And yet after rushing to take our goal kick we then take ages to get the ball into opposition 3rd thus giving their defence plenty of time to get set.

All of our problems stem from not defending with enough players, when we turn the ball over and the opposition breaks, they are man for man at worst, this means they get an attempt on goal, or turn it back over quickly, teams don't have to slow down, build, and push people up against us to achieve a numerical advantage, that in turn is why we never get in behind anyone, they never get drawn out because they don't need to, you can attack with 4/5 against us and get good chances and set pieces.

The players we have, we should be playing 5 at the back, sit deep, make the opponent come out, then hit a long ball over the top.

Hate that, slow it down, kill clock, give a rest period, get the defensive shape back.

Another basic mistake that is easily fixed.

That's not the system (regardless of if you like it), the system is be relentless, quick kicks, throw-ins, always on opponent.

I'd actually argue when we play like that most teams struggle, it's when we do our inevitable slow down that we get in trouble.

I don't like it.

But we don't actually do that.

I don't think it would work if we did. It might actually get worse as we'd potentially be turning the ball over even more.

It's not youth football, you can't just bring that positive just do your best and play the right way attitude to it, its the Premier League, you have to cheat, you have to be negative, you have to stop football to win at football, and you have to win, thats all that matters, its not a beauty contest.

I agree we are relentless but it is like a relentless Ford Fiesta grinding its way around a track for lap after lap whilst the F1 cars have to pit and get fresh tyres, then they come pounding past us as we relentlessly grind onwards with our teeth gritted and eyes fixed on the road ahead.
