Giovani Lo Celso

Apparently it's not uncommon for a club to allow the player to talk with the buying club in advance of agreeing a fee provided they are both on the same page and have similar fee expectations.

Spurs in for Lo Celso
Tottenham are sizing up a move for Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

Lo Celso’s representatives are confident they have reached an agreement that Real Betis will consider any deal worth £70m.

Spurs are believed to have had a bid of £62m - made up of £50m plus add-ons - rejected by Real Betis, who must pay Paris Saint Germain a sell-on fee.

Being that we signed two players from PSG we must of had a good knowledge of who was there (also Inc the Rabiot interest)...so was this chap not noted then? Betis have basically flipped him and we're the ones suffering the massive mark up.

Couldn't we have done a Toby with him (Southampton/ A.mardrid) and stuck our oar in before Betis signed him on a permanent deal?. They only signed him permanently 6 weeks ago FFS.

Just speculating/asking but was he on something like a loan to buy deal that allowed them an exclusive option to get him?

But we were able to see that talent this season and unless the option to sign permanently for Betis was water tight we should have stuck our nose in.

Perhaps it was?

I think this season he has taken everyone by surprise, essentially being one of the best MFs in Europe for a side that finished midtable in La Liga. Impressive, and I doubt anyone expected it.

From what I can make out he was highly thought of as a potential talent, but at the same time Betis got him on loan with an option to buy for relative peanuts, so perhaps not that highly rated?

I mean, there clearly wasnt competition and PSG didnt consider putting a decent valuation on him...

It’s almost like money doesn’t mean anything to PSG...

While I know exactly what you mean, it really does - they keep having issues with FFP and pretty well shot themselves in the foot on this one.

Whether or not he was seen as the next big thing, a decent purchase option is just good sense...

From what I've read, I think the loan terms were watertight - a compulsory purchase if he made X appearances, IIRC. At what PSG no doubt thought was a decent price at the time. As others have said, he wasn't pulling up any trees in Paris, hence being loaned out in the first place.

Giovani Lo Celso wants to move to Tottenham this summer and join up with Mauricio Pochettino, Sky Sports News has been told.

The Argentine is keen to move to the Premier League and is hoping current club Real Betis will allow him to leave.

Spurs remain in talks with Betis and are hopeful of concluding a deal for the attacking midfielder, Sky Sports News understands.

I was just saying the way they are set up is not a reason to suspect the valuation is a mistake. Even in today’s game one mans rubbish is another mans treasure but PSG feels like the kid who got the new hd tv and binned in went ultra hd came out and let the patient guy get a not quite but top tv for half the original price 6 months ago

Has anyone here seen a lot of Lo Celso? If so, would you say we’re more likely to be interested in him as a central midfielder in a two, or more as a no.10? Seems he’s done both for Betis. Going on stats alone, his relative lack of assists and key passes suggests he’s actually not a no.10 as such?

If true then one would assume we could add £8 million onto the add-ons part and get the deal done.

I imagine they would prefer it up front, but £8m today is basically pennies on the over all deal so I wouldnt imagine it a deal breaker...

Spurs remain in talks with Betis and are hopeful of concluding a deal for the attacking midfielder, Sky Sports News understands.

But the Spanish club, who only recently made his loan from Paris Saint-Germain permanent, are asking for a significant transfer fee, as close to his £88m release clause as possible.

Any deal would almost certainly smash Tottenham's transfer record - but Pochettino is understood to have been given the chance to spend a significant chunk of Spurs' Champions League revenue early in this transfer window.

The club will then look to accrue further funds through player sales and reinvest in improving the squad ahead of next season.
