General Transfer Rumour Discussion Thread

IMO Chadli is as good as Mirallas, or at least there is not a significant difference in end product. From the times I have seen Everton play (not a huge amount admittedly) Mirallas strikes me as being a bit flash, and too often makes the wrong choice on the ball. He's scored some great goals and no doubt has a great highlights reel but he's not always a regular starter for Everton even when fit. I put that down to his inconsistency and poor decision making.

A quick snoop on toffee talk shows me a lot of Everton fans would gladly swap him for Lennon. That to me tells a story (which conveniently backs up my point ;)). I've ignored the Everton fans who don't agree with me.

Another player with a similar return to Chadli that's an option for all 3 attacking midfield positions that comes in with PL experience so will most likely not need a lot of time to adapt. I don't see the downside...

Unless of course he would cost so much that we could get someone even better for that money, not sure what a realistic asking price for Mirallas is at this point.

For a decade Everton have been a very good system club.

But their players don't seem to work outside their system - their qualities don't seem transferable - Pienaar being a textbook example
Apart from Saha who did a decent job - he's the only player we've signed from them during that time - cannot base this on a single sample surely

Rodriguez has all that and more (and will be cheaper due to his contract situation)

True. But he also has the question marks around him because of his injury problems. Even if he does recover to get back to his best that might take a while...

Wouldn't mind either of them though to be honest.

It's also good to start bringing in more homegrown players, now that there are plans to cut the foreign player quota from 17 to 13

I didn't mean just to us - Arteta, Lescott, Fellini, Jeffers etc. all flundered after leaving Everton

Arteta has played loads of games, and been an important member of arsenal's side the last few seasons, Lescott is beeing played at left back by Pulis, Fellaini has really turned around his United career and has forced LVG into using him and Jeffers has been brick everywhere, not just after leaving Everton. Other than Pienaar, who has left Everton as one of their better players and not done well at their new club? I guess you could say Rodwell, but he was never going to get games for city was he.

I find this statement strange to say the least.

I really like Mirallas, but he won't be very good without service - he does for Everton what I expected Lamela to do for us. Good inside fwd that asks a question of the defence, creates a bit, scores a bit.

Mirallas does have that unteachable quality of being in the right place at the right time to score

Opportunity lost is the main downside I can think of. Mirallas and Chadli would probably end up swapping in and out of the team, neither of them making the position their own in similar fashion to the Lamela/Townsend I think. Mirallas may have more skill but his decision making is questionable and I predict he would be slaughtered roundly by the (ever so patient) posters on this forum after a couple of matches.
I just think we can do better. Who that is I don't know really. Maybe Rodriguez or Thauvin (who we've been linked with), or fudge it why not Depay!!!

Definite question marks over Rodgriquez too. Don't think we'll get Depay. Haven't seen Thauvin, but will he be able to come in and make an impact straight away?

We have a very young team already, rather short on experience. Most of the players leaving this summer will most likely be the older more experienced players. A couple of PL experienced players that can come in and do a job strengthening our team pretty much straight away would do us really good I think.

If bringing in Mirallas would cost enough to stop us from signing someone more talented we really want then I can definitely see the argument for not signing him. I just think we need some balance between potential/youth and experience/short term ability and we're already quite at the far end of that spectrum on the youth/talent side of things.

an impressive young wing attacker who is just starting to make his name is Anthony Martial at Monaco.....They no longer have the ability to buy or keep top players so i dont see them holding on to him for too long. For us it would be like trying to sign Depay a year to two years ago. Raw talent

Tottenham sent a scout to watch Lille against Bordeaux last weekend where Lille won 2-0 and midfielders Sofiane Boufal and Idrissa Gueye impressed.

Tottenham were also represented last week as Club Brugge played out a 0-0 draw with Dnipro in the Europa League.

Dnipro winger Yevhen Konoplyanka was understood to be the object of Tottenham's attentions with Chelsea and West Ham also represented at the game.

Re: Kevin Wimmer

I know nothing about this guy so the stories that we're about to sign him didn't really excite me. But that's the way with most unknowns... there's no way of knowing whether we have a Bale or a Postiga when they sign. We can speculate and hope of course, and we can watch YouTube clips specifically designed to make him look good. But we just don't know how a new signing is going to turn out. I'm always prepared to give the benefit of the doubt, and I'm always hopeful, but I must admit... I found myself wondering... "Is a 22 year old central defender with a single season in the lower reaches of the Bundesliga really the answer to our obvious defensive issues?"

As I say, we can't really know. But a glance at the stats is at least encouraging. Wimmer played in central defence for the full 90 minutes of every game (excluding two he missed through suspension). And during the season so far FC Koln have conceded fewer goals than any team outside the top 5 (and even within the top 5, only two of them are substantially better). The reason FC Koln are mid-table is because they're not scoring enough - the defence is solid as hell. And while he had a couple of partners in central defence during the season, it's Wimmer that has been the constant.

Encouraging signs if nothing else. And based on what I'm reading in the media, it looks like the transfer is more likely than not.

regarding the Club Brugge - Dnipro game, we were also probably looking at the big Brugge striker Mamadou Oulare. It seems most top european clubs are checking him out as he is considered the next Benteke/Lukaku type to come out of Belgian football

Re Mirallas. All I'd say is he is better than Townsend or Lamela based on both of their Tottenham careers so far.

As much as we love foreign unknown signings that "could" be the next big thing, most of them aren't, as we've seen with Lamela, Soldado, Paulinho, Vapour.

Eriksen and Chadli working out from 7 signings is probably par for the course.

Redknapp signed a lot of these types of players, experienced Premier League performers that fitted his style. Its an intelligent way of doing business and the likes of Kranjcar, Bassong, Kaboul (pre-injuries 2nd spell), Palacios, Crouch and all them lot did really well. If you build a solid core of those types of proven professionals, and mix in a few kids, you only need one or two class players to develop to really be motoring.

If we build this sort of solid Prem team in Poch's style around Eriksen, Lloris and Kane we could be right up there. Its all about giving your class players the platform to perform in your system.

If Poch wants a return to this philosophy rather than spunking our load on expensive unproven foreigners then I'm all for it.

If Poch wants Mirallas as he thinks he presses higher and is more effective in his style than Lamela and Townsend, plus he wants to add a bit of Prem savvy in a 27 year old who has been doing it here for years, then I hope we get him.

He might not be the best player, but he's very effective on his day and if he is a player that presses like Poch wants and gives Eriksen and Kane more space as a result then what a player he could be for our system.

Was watching Lennon at the weekend and it did seem like Lennon was doing exactly what you say of Mirallas NWND.. I'm watching it thinking, wow where has this player been the last 4 years, Lennon is playing for his next contract... and the trait of someone that may well go back to type when that deal is signed. Hoping he doesn't come back and Everton get suckered into parting with a decent player.. Mirallas or Stones please.

I don't really agree with the bit about Lennon. I don't think his work rate or the way he played for the team could ever be questioned. He was always a bit slow to get his form back when returning from injury, but I don't think his desire was ever a problem. Lennon going back to type is exactly what has already happened at Everton under a manager who plays to his strengths and picks him regularly.
