General Transfer Rumour Discussion Thread

This is how the transfer market works these days unless you're a CL club and pay over the odds or gamble on relatively unproven and even those are hard to push through as most clubs don't want to sell.

you really make it sound like its near impossible to sign a player......

i think because of the level of player we are trying to sign and the amount it will cost, meaning mid level and relatively cheap ie Wimmer, Alli, Trippier, Alderweireld, Werner, Njie, Yarmelenko standard, there really shouldnt be any problems and delays securing these types nice and early

- Wimmer we'd obviously been working on for months before the season ended
- Trippier was at a relegated club and had a low buy-out clause
- Alderweireld fell in our laps because Southampton didn't read the small print.

N'jie though is one of the best 2-3 players at his club and Werner very highly thought of at his. Their two clubs won't give them up easily.

The Euro exchange rate will work in our favour though in terms of being able to offer an attractive amount.

Aulas has said that out of Njie and one other(name escapes me) one of them can leave. So he is for sale at the right price, and Stuttgart are a very very average side atm and will struggle to keep any of their players if someone comes in for them. Like i said we are talking here about mid level, cheapish targets. They are not Pedro, Depay, Morata, Cavani etc

all we need to do is sit down with the clubs for however long it takes to thrash out a deal

Then what if the player thinks.. "hmm Spurs are a decent club but you know what, it's only June, July etc so I might as well wait and see who else wants me until the 31st". No point rushing when some other clubs might come forward nearer the deadline with bigger offers as they get desperate.

If I was a player I would see no point rushing to join a new club during a window until you weighed up all your options. The only reason to move quickly would be if it was your boyhood club or a club you were hoping would come in for you. Sadly I don't think we are big enough that some of these targets are thinking "Spurs hey, he'll yes.. get it done asap"

In 2011 we clearly needed a proper DM and CF all summer. We signed Parker and Adebayor at the end of August. As soon as they joined, we exploded into form, but we'd dropped 6 out of 6 points before they'd played. We missed out on Champions League that year by one point.

Then in 2012, we signed Adebayor, Dembele, Lloris and Dempsey right at the end of the window. We dropped seven points from the first three games against Saudi Sportswashing Machine, West Brom and Norwich. Had we either scored just one more or conceded just one less goal in any of those three relatively easy games, we'd have qualified for the Champions League, but we dropped points in all three as a result of not having the necessary players fit and available.

The window closes on August 31st, but the season starts on August 8th. We absolutely should be looking to take maximum points from the games against Stoke, Leicester and Everton in August, and whilst the United game is widely seen as anything at all that we take being a bonus, I personally don't think we'll have a better time to take points off them than when four new players are settling into the starting XI and there's a big question mark over the future of their star keeper. Not to mention the fact that they lost at home to the likes of West Brom, Swansea and Southampton last season and that we've won there on two of our last three visits. Four games we really should be looking to maximise our chances of victory in, and four games that it looks like we're going into unprepared.

Now that Sherwood and Redknapp are gone - we have far less insight into the behind the scenes work in the club, so it's hard to know whether the problem lies with poor scouting and target identification, indecisiveness of who to sign, or Levy haggling over small change, but the fact that we have allowed ourselves to go into the season with Lamela and Chadli both still in the starting XI and with Kane as our only recognised striker is shambolic.

yeah but then every player could think like that and apart from the transfers the top clubs make no other player would ever move before the last two weeks of the window. Thats not the case though is it, look how many players move in June and July compared to the last 2 weeks of the window

i think if a club really wants a player they have to simply go direct to the selling club and the player himself and show enough enthusiasm and willing to get a deal done. Players need to feel wanted, made to feel they are vital to a project, a few words from the manager of the buying club can have very many positives effects. Its not rocket science

And lots of moves happen in the last week as players realize they're surplus at their current club or nobody bigger wants them or the selling club manage to sign a replacement.

Somebody ought to do an analysis of what level of players move early, how much they cost and what kind of clubs they go to.

IMO players like Werner, Njie and Berahino would all consider a move to Spurs as a good step up and would jump at the chance to join us if we agreed a fee with their club.

What if in July 2011 the only two options available were Seth Johnson and Kenwyne Jones?

Lloris certainly wasn't available until the last few days of August 2012. Should we have moved earlier and signed Craig Gordon?

80% of all transfers happen in the last fortnight of the window. We are really no worse than any other club.

A transfer can cost £40-50m over the course of the contract. It's better to think about the next 5+ years than the next 2 weeks.

The thing that needs to change is FIFA moving the deadline back to 31 July. It's really distracting and unhelpful that it runs into the season.

Seeing as the latter two in particular have no reason to or interest in selling, we'd have to throw silly money at them at this stage.

Aulas has said Njie is one of two players can go if the right offer comes in.....West Brom are in a tricky situation where Berahino is into the last 2 years of his contract and he apparently has indicated that he wont extend it.

Wrong on many counts.

Lloris was available, we just took our time dingdonging about haggling on price. Yes, we got a fantastic deal for a fantastic player at a fantastic price, but if we'd had Hugo around to prevent the goals against West Brom or Norwich being conceded then we'd have made a lot more money from CL qualification than we saved, and who knows we might even have had a chance of keeping Bale for one more year. There are fine margins in football...

Second - we're being left behind by our rivals in the transfer market. Arsenal badly needed a keeper, they've got one. Man Utd badly needed to improve at CM and to add some more attacking flair - they've done it. Emirates Marketing Project badly needed some young, fast, dynamic players to add to the squad, they've done it. Liverpool needed more firepower up front, an experienced midfield replacement for Gerrard, a tricky winger replacement for Sterling and a new RB...and guess what, they've done it. It's not even just the biggest clubs in the league - even the likes of Stoke, West Ham and Southampton have all signed more than twice as many players as we have this summer - to address deficiencies in their squads, and some of them look very promising. First priority for us this summer should have been a top class wide forward/winger - not signed. Second should have been another one - not signed. Third should have been a top class CM - not signed...unless Alli really steps up in his first season. It's good that we've addressed the CB issues, but then the other urgent requirement was to get in another striker to cover/play with/rotate with Kane - not signed.

We've done well to hang onto Kane, Lloris and Eriksen this summer. If we don't finish top 4 this season then the vultures will start to circle, especially over Lloris - and we'll always be playing the one step forward two steps back game in the transfer window. Now more than ever is the time we need to be pulling the stops out and taking a gamble or two.

Right offer being twice their actual value at the moment. Until they show a willingness to meet in the middle we'll have to wait. I've seen claims we need THREE forwards/strikers brought in. If we were to do whatever it takes to get someone the manager wants in NOW, there wouldn't be any money for number two or three.

Lloris wasn't available until the last week as Lyon suddenly needed money.

We weren't even looking for anyone else as AVB was happy to go with Friedel.
