Bale: I snubbed Man Utd for Spurs

GARETH BALE has revealed he turned down the chance to join Manchester United.

The Wales winger was offered the chance to move to Old Trafford by United boss Alex Ferguson when he was a 17-year-old playing for Southampton.

But the lure of first-team football with Tottenham saw Bale reject Fergie's advances in favour of a switch to North London.

Bale, 22, said: "Man United were interested in me but I wanted to play first-team football.

"I thought I had a better chance of getting that at Tottenham.

"The manager at the time, Martin Jol, told me he wanted me to go straight into the first team.

"That was the main thing that drew me to the club."

Bale also revealed he had the chance to play for England but opted to choose Wales instead.

He made his first appearance for his national side in a 2-1 win over Trinidad and Tobago in May 2006, becoming the youngest ever player to represent Wales.

Speaking to Match of the Day Magazine, he added: ÔÇ£That was an emotional debut.

"When I came on I knew I was the youngest ever Wales international, at the age of 16.

"IÔÇÖm a proud Welshman ÔÇö thatÔÇÖs why I didnÔÇÖt choose to play for England. I could have, but IÔÇÖd rather be Welsh!ÔÇØ

Let's hope Hazard's brain follows a similar pattern of thought.

Doubt his agent's will though

We knew this anyway, but it kind of makes sense that whiskey nose regrets not getting him, especially after continually calling Harry telling him you cant pick him (due to his no win jinx a while back) would mean he could have picked him up cheap from us.

sneaky old bastard.

I remember there was talk at the time that Giggs had a word with him about going to Utd ( apparently Giggs was his boyhood idol)

I don't think the two situations are even slightly comparable imo. Hazard now is much more likely to get minutes at a top club that a 17 year old Bale was.

Anyway, back on topic, I thought this was relatively common knowledge?

Me too. Their interest was very public at the time.

Yeah. Also Hazard will probably cost ?ú25+, not a bunch of teams around willing to spend that kind of money on someone that won't be a regular starter straight away. While there are plenty of teams around willing to spend ?ú8m-10m on a youngster that won't be a regular starter until after a couple of seasons.

So he basically says "I'd rather go to a top 5 team than THE best team over the last twenty years" and "I'd rather play for an international team barely in the top 50 than one well in the top ten". Makes him sound very small pond.

Quite happy he is spurs and not man u and not to bothered about England really these days. But don't think he needed to say both together!

No, he would rather play football regularly rather than be just a squad player for quite a long time, possibly only getting playing time on loan deals. Knowing full well that if he turns out to be good enough for a top team in the world he will be able to get that transfer if need be.

And he would actually rather play for the country he feels he belongs to, rather than make a decision based only on what gave him the greater chance of international success. That's wrong too now?
