Lineker: Walcott not in the same league as Bale
By Peter Fairchild 16 Mar 2013 2:00:00 AM

Former England and Tottenham striker Gary Lineker has claimed that Arsenal star Theo Walcott “is not quite in the same league” as Spurs’ top-scorer Gareth Bale.

The former Tottenham striker says that the 23-year old is on a different level to the Arsenal forward - but warns the Welshman to eradicate diving from his game.

Lineker went on to suggest that Bale has the potential to be one of the best players in the world and that the Welsh player reminds him of Cristiano Ronaldo - in both his game and progression in football.

Lineker told Absolute Radio: "Spurs have got Bale. People talk about Walcott but I don't think they are quite in the same league personally."

"He could be right up there. You know he’s starting to remind you a little bit of Ronaldo in the way he plays and Ronaldo made the sort of similar sort of steps towards the ability that he’s now showing.

"He’s phenomenally talented, he’s unbelievably fast and he’s strong and he strikes the ball beautifully as good as anyone around.

"He’s also good in the air, he’s got all the attributes to be an absolute all time great.

"If he can keep the consistency that he’s shown certainly in 2013, if he can keep that going for a year or two, he’ll be right up there amongst the best handful of players in the world."

Lineker moved to Tottenham from Barcelona in 1989, scoring an impressive 67 goals in 105 appearances for the north London side during his three seasons at the club.

On the subject of whether Bale has an unfair reputation for diving, Lineker used Lionel Messi as an example to the Welshman.

The former striker continued: “Well you know you tend to create these things for yourself. So that’s something that he probably needs to look at.

“Messi doesn’t ever dive which is another amazing attribute to him. There are one or two incidents where he’s clearly thrown himself to the ground and then people look for it.

“If I were him now I’d try and eradicate that from my game."

Is good ol' Gary playing North London mind games??

Re: Gareth Bale

The messi not diving ever bit is tosh though

I was thinking the same. IIRC, he was involved in a few diving row not too long ago. I think all the great players have dived at some stage of their career to try to get a freekick or penalty for their team.

Re: Gareth Bale

I don't think anyone is saying Messi has never ever dived. Every player has dived to some extent of some stage of their careers. But he never goes down when he is being kicked at, it does take a lot for Messi to go down as he always tries to continue dribbling and considering the way he is targeted it is a great credit to him....

Re: Gareth Bale

I still think moving Bale central will be our downfall.

He is superb on the left and that is his position. He simply had a good game moving to central midfield in a game and for some reason it's now his position, considering we have no left winger to replace him it's poor management. He struggles to get involved in the centre in my opinion. Today was the same, especially without Lennon, he should be definitely playing to give us natural width.

And What will he do out wide???

Cross the ball ? for who ? He needs to be central as he the only player who looks like scoring

I agree he is great out wide but with our pony forwards we cant waste him wide

Re: Gareth Bale

we should sell him, he is the problem

if he wasn't so damn good we'd be in our rightful position of 14th now and we wouldn't be expecting to beat liverpool or fulham, we'd all be absolutely bloody delighted that we had avoided relegation again

i want my tottenham back

 i feel like this sometimes.....its too stressful at the top:)

Re: Gareth Bale

All the noises coming from the club seem to indicate he is happy. And Bale himself seems happy.

But you really can't blame Bale if we fail AGAIN to get better strikers in the summer and he decides to move on. Even if we do finish in the top 4, the strikers we've got ain't good enough.

Re: Gareth Bale

Nothing wrong with him playing central, but if Lennon is out makes more sense for Bale to play wide than to play someone else out of position

I agree. We miss natural width when Lennon is out so we need to make up for it with Bale playing. You'd think AVB would have learnt not from just the Liverpool game but with Inter Milan too.

Re: Gareth Bale

Looked very very tired today.

which is a terrible excuse. He hadn't played in 7 days.

If anything, in my view he took that knock in the first half and played through it in the second which could prove to be stupid if it affects him later on in the season, he wanted to stay on and try and create something so fair play to him.
