Federico Fazio

I find it absolutely amazing how some 'Spurs fans' take delight in rubbishing our players, many blokes I know who follow other teams would never bad mouth their players as ours are on this site. You may think some players are s***, but they are our s*** and we should be behind everyone who players for the club.

Sorry can you walk me through the logic of getting warm and fuzzies over players that are holding back our club, taking money out of the club, before ****ing off to another club to score against us or be a spiteful prick of a pundit towards us.
 
He was very good today imo -- playing against forwards who lacked pace allowed him to dominate in the air and have a good game. I think he could do with a quicker partner than Vertonghen, but these two have certainly established themselves as the first-choice pairing.

I agree about possibly needing a pacier partner than Verts; however, I think what would make that less urgent would be a good and pacy DM in front of them. Sandro at his finest would have been superb for them imo. Possibly also a Wanyama

In those 14 games we conceded just 11 and scored 26

And here's their record in the PL:

Over a whole season that would translate into 81 points, enough to get us into the top two for sure.

However we're never going to kid ourselves here are we, we're all too aware that several of those results have included a massive dollop of good fortune. And we also recognise, don't we, that whilst Fazio can be something of a beast with his head and great in the tackle, he urgently needs to improve his marking and positional awareness in and around the box, especially against through balls and balls over the top, and that Vertonghen should probably have conceded at least a couple of penalties, got sent off and consequently missed a few of those games.

The best defences need a good slice of luck and the best defenders know when to take a calculated gamble. Take Vertonghens possible pen at Leicester. Their forward was steaming in on goal, ref was blind side of Vertonghen so a calculated lunge where to be fair he takes ball and man out but gets enough on ball to significantly change its direction. I'd say he's thinking there's a good chance of them scoring here I'm going for it in the knowledge that the ref probably doesn't have a clear view and he'd have to be 100% sure to give a pen in the last 10 mins.

Man U under Fergie used to be seen as an insanely lucky team that never conceded penalties always got them awarded and used to Nick results having been saved time and again by Schmeichel etc. It wasn't luck it was canny players giving their all every game and prepared to make those calculated gambles both attacking and defending

Should have, would have bla bla bla......So we are the only team that from time to time get a bit of luck? The thing is, if it didn't happen, it didn't happen!

I'm more than happy 'to kid myself'. I watch Spurs and HOPE I'm going to see a good GAME, if we lose I'm disappointed, but it's not the end of the world I don't expect us to win the 'Moneyship' and I'm not desperate to see us play in the 'Cash League'. I've got what is called a life and how Spurs perform does not diminish me in the eyes of my friends or peers, so I go for my own entertainment come what may.

Except you're not. That excellent approach exactly sums up my own.
 
I really don't think people understand what Fazio brings to the team. I get all his weaknesses, we can all see them, however

- his ability to win almost 100% of everything in the air really protects us a lot more than is obvious

Go watch the AVB/TS and even early Poch teams that got smashed, a lot of it was when we were pushing up, high ball over the top, our defenders wouldn't cut it out, it would leave them exposed against a runner, usually in a 1:1 type situation.

In the PL, the ability to win/cut out that aerial route is a massive proactive advantage, you think Stoke is difficult to score against for top side because their defenders are good with their feet?

I agree. But he also doesn't flap. He stands his ground and doesn't panic. That can't be said of Kaboul, Chiriches and a lot of other defenders we've had recently. To have TWO cool as cucumber defenders back there in Faz and Verts as a pair really helps. He might get done a bit on the turn or for pace, but it seems to be quite rare and only if the TEAM gets caught out, not him. It's like Terry playing for Chelsea. Sure, you might think his lack of pace is a weakness, but when did Chelsea as a team ever let that get fully exploited. In the right system, with the right players around him, Fazio is a monster.

I agree too.

I also think people are a bit too quick about judging his supposed weaknesses (other than pace, although even that seems somewhat overstated). He's still settling into life in the PL and the rest of the team has been anything other than settled with some fairly limited protection at times. As we improve as a team I think Fazio will continue to look better as a player.
 
He is just starting and will just get better and better. I think he will even eclipse fan favourite Verts eventually. My guess is Fazio + Dier in a couple of years time. (flamesuit on!)

Wouldnt argue with that tbh, I think he's already performing better than Verts - I like that for a big physical defender he's good on the ball too. I dont really think Jan has been playing as well as has been suggested on here at times, just better than last year which to be fair wasnt hard...
 
Correct me if i am wrong but it was his quick pass from defense that released Lamela who squared to Chadli to set up Kane for the goal against Leicester?

He does like to release the ball forward quickly and precisely from defense. Obviously this is a risky game but fits with the fast transitions that Poch wants, catching the opposition out of position and creating better chances.
