Eric Dier

If Wimmer doesn't get a run out in the next three games it does not bode well for him long term IMHO.
Dier will play left side CB with Jan on Tuesday.

Wouldn't he play right side as Jan is so left footed and Dier seems more right footed? Unless there is a new fashion for inverted centre backs to mirror the inverted wingers these modern football folk fancy.

Yep got me left and right muddled........

Wimmer is left footed so not sure that him playing alongside Jan is something Poch would advocate when the right-footed Dier is available.

Competition for places... And the cover/competition provided by Wanyama in midfield means Dier is more available to compete for a covering centre back role.

Vertonghen is quite versatile and might be quite capable of playing as the right sided of the two centre backs. Based on last season Wimmer deserves game time ahead of Dier at centre back, but he might have to wait patiently. I'm sure whoever of Dier and Wimmer is left out will be disappointed not to start. Not sure it says a lot about the long term, there will be other opportunities as long as the players work hard.

Maybe but afair he's never played on the right side of CB up to now, so probably not going to happen. I'm guessing Verts himself must have let it be known it's not his favoured side.

Agree totally. Verts is a very dominantly left-footed player and it makes no sense to try him on the right. An inverted CB Is not like an inverted winger and leafs to instability, which is why it does not exist, like the unicorn and Father Christmas.

He was okay. Made two errors when he ranged out of position to close down players ahead of him that Wanyama already had covered - that drew a rebuke from Verts the second time around, who had to go shut down the player Dier was trying to get to (because he'd evaded Dier's challenge, iirc). He also had that one moment late on where he completely missed his clearance on a whipped cross and we were only saved by Kiessling's inability to direct the ball home. But, other than that, he was solid enough - distributed well, headed away crosses well enough and did decently covering for Trippier when the latter went forward (although, having said that, most of Leverkusen's attacks came down his side nonetheless).

I don't think we'll collapse if Toby isn't back. However, I do think we'll look more vulnerable, as we did today.

Looked very average. I think we should give Wimmer a chance.
Harsh. He's coming back from injury after a full season last year AND the Euros. And remember, that he is still only 22 and played all last season as a midfielder and before that had not played CB on a consistent basis for us. And are you seriously suggesting that Poch play TWO left-sided CB's together? Really?

Wimmer is a CB. We keep making excuses for our players. Enough with it. He is far too casual on the ball and makes me very uncomfortable when he is back there.

I feel sorry for Dier. He looked like a brilliant DM in the making last season. He may not run around like Wanayama, but there's a lot more to football than that. Potentially he offers a lot more as DM. He breaks up a lot of play through positioning rather than running about. He is also a very good distributor of the ball forward. He can roam forward with the ball. Quick and strong. A great header of the ball. We ask him to learn to play a very specialist position well -which he excels at. Then we drop him and ask him to play CB cover -which we already have more than competent CB specialist in Wimmer. I'm not surprised he struggles.

In my team he is one of first names on the team sheet at DM -week in week out. And if we tinkle him around too much, he won't be short of offers, and he will go and perform what is one of the most difficult positions on the pitch to play well, for someone else.

He is a brilliant DM. We need to accept though that he's not a CB so if Alderweireld is out then we play CCv or Wimmer until we sign another CB
