Eric Dier

Fazio is dominant in the air and a little nasty around the pitch. But he gets caught out too easily against the nippy players. I would 100% play him against the spammers though. We will need his strength in the air. Dier is no slouch in the air at all, he is under rated at that I think. And also he has pace. I think coming from the portugeuse league he is used to players that are more tricky around the box. He just needs to align that with the pace of the game here. Its only like his 4th or so game at CB in the premier league. He is also a threat in their box at set pieces.

Its verts that worries me at the moment. He is looking good but not solid. I thought as the nearest centre back he could have done more to block Llalana's cross.

I prefer Fazio because of his composure and organisational skills.

But I think Dier is fantastic and I see him and Stones being England's CB pairing for much of the next decade.

Im not convinced I want him ahead of Fazio just yet....

Think he's looked better (forget my attacks on Fazio early doors) - his pace is a major asset alongside Verts and we lose very little else. Fazios size and experience will be much needed for certain games though - West Ham being one of them.

Dier is better on the ball - always has his head up and plays it out very well. Fazio does look to do the same, but is far more likely to get caught in possession or give it away with his distribution.

Fazio's organisation cannot be underestimated

That report about pace has Downing as faster than Sterling! That can't be for serious?!

Didn't look, but speed can be very different, e.g. speed with or without ball, initial speed (5-10 yards), vs. top speed.

Dier is definitely quick, and good to see Poch adapting to obvious opposition strengths

Id guess that the figures are taken over a certain distance and with the ball - with Sterling (and a few others) falling foul of the crtiteria

Again, Dier's role is the role Verts is playing now. Fazio has his own unique strengths, and those strengths can't be replicated by either Dier or Verts, imo.

Dier's got a great future, but it will be as a technically skilled, calm, quick centre-back, not a Fazio-style blood and guts man. :p

Dier yesterday tracked Sturridge at one point and comfortably kept up with him

Fazio would have just put him in the stands and took the booking

Fazio suits players like Costa and Benteke where as Dier suits the more technical forwards IMO

It's a great blend to have the options.

When I look at liverpoos options and the money they Spent on them I cringe. They paid more for Lovren than we paid for Fazio, Verts and Dier combined iirc

Be great to have a solid 4th choice option who can come in next season and push us further on

its just a hunch, but I do feel that dier + fazio will eventually become our best pairing.

its verts + another for now, but i get the impression that verts prefers to play like a lone-wolf doing his thing, not a typical CB approach working in pairs or across the back four.

I'm really excited about Dier and hope he stays for a long time.
He's got all the attributes to be a top quality centre back and a lot of composure too.

and only 20 still. He is getting better and better. First season in the prem. Composed on the ball. Aggressive when he neads to be and no slouch in the air. He is playing better than Verts at the moment.

He's had his share of poor moments this season, but at CB against some top players he has looked the part.

We do have a good young group in Eriksen, Kane, Bentaleb and Dier who could go on and form a strong spine for the team.

Dont forget Rose, Mason and walker.

Walker is hardly a young'n anymore and in the next couple of season's I could see other players displacing Mason and Rose. Those 4 though have something more than the others which we need to harness.

The only issue ai had with him today was the time he tackled Costa and then let him have a wee huggy Im sorry moment! He should have just ignored the cretin and played on, we are still too nice! Super player though I think

I like the fact that he seems to have a bit of a mean streak about him. When someone cnuts him, he cnuts back. Looks to have the makings of a very solid central defender as well. Good game today.

Firstly dier is quality and if we can get ridnof kaboul and chiriches in the summer he will be a great player to have and will be very important next year.

Tbf name a left back we can realistically sign to displace rose - he gets slagged off by most but he is a really promising left back I wouldn't swapfor many. Davies looks a good player but rose has really stepped it up.

Mason plays in a position where he may find himself out the team due to a new signing but he should be in and around out squad of years to come. The core of players we now have is actually very promising.

I'm not having a pop at Rose, far from it I felt he was only second to Bentaleb today performance wise. My point was that whilst Mason and Rose are good players, those 4 look to have greater potential and should hold down those first team spots for the next few years. Rose and Mason could be upgraded on, though there are still other positions we need to improve first.

As for the name of a player. I'm interested to see how Cresswell develops at West Ham. He looks like a very promising player and I could well see a couple of the big boys looking at him in a couple of years.

Dier looks like he will become a very good player, however he should not be in the team ahead of Fazio and especially in yesterdays game.
