Do you not see the sub-plot between the 90s and now though?

What has happened over the decades is that the officiating has changed so much, and the dark arts are winning over football. Referees don't use the laws of the game anymore. They don't even make players come over to them and give them a talking down. They let all the infringements go and we're now seeing all the centre midfield maestros have to move out to the wide areas because you just can't do what Gerrard did back in the day. The managers plan all of their tactics based on what can be got away with and train their players that way all the way down to kids football.

The product is now dull as ditchwater. You don't even get the pundits talking about the skills in the game anymore. They're just talking about contentious decisions and VAR. I find it thoroughly boring if I'm honest. You get the odd piece of magic like Lamela's goal this week, but most of it is just a polluted down product. The last thing is that the companies like Sky think they are a bigger product than the actual 22 players, 2 goalposts and ball. They've lost the plot in this area.

FIFA, UEFA, PL etc have a lot to answer for. I'm not even including The FA as they have no empowerment left anyway as the broadcasting companies only work with the other organisations.

I think there are too many layers and too many "players", everyone seemingly got their hand in the game and its getting worse, thats from governance to access to players and social media IMO.

We have our rants and raves on here and this is a medium of social media, but twitter and YT have all but killed off the last enthusiasm I have for views and debate.

This may sound odd but for me it started when people took notice of people like DT at AFTV who called Wenger a fraud and his views almost became more popular with an audience than what the actual manager of their team had achieved for their club and I say back and thought "How". Then you move forward to 2025 it works out that he kidnapped and beat up his ex GF and rather than people focus on that they still listen to his extremism of "he is sh1t and he is a cnu7". Its just mind boggling access in the game I love thats killed it to an extent IMO.

There are Spurs YT "celebs" like Savva, Perchy and some fella called Stel as examples who have been accused and proven to have either flashed, assaulted or sent online abuse to women and people are lapping up their bile the spill and infest into the fanbase about the club. I just can't get my head round it all.

Paul O'Keefe seemingly having the fanbase on strings, he is a DJ who hustles a few Non League players about and is clearly not as ITK as he makes out, but people worship him and he gets away with making claims so thousands about people like Lange, with no basis other than he is bitter not being closer to the game like Lange and for the fact he works in silence and therefore he can't claim to have known about people like Ode and Tel u-turn. If O'Keefe was as good as he makes himself sound he wouldn't be living in a bedsit and DJing for money at weekend. And that's not to knock him but let's not lie about your influence in the game at the expense of others actually working at the top level

Its a world and game of extremes.....even on here people feel the right to claim "Levy is a cancer" I mean fcuk me, what world are we in where people feel they can say crap like that about a bloke who has built us up but also made mistakes.........like literally everyone on this forum bar Scara in his mind (joke Scara).

Football should have always been a break from the norm and an adventure when it came about, now its been hijacked by people and it just feels an extreme extension of life and politics.

Sorry for the rant and the off shoots into other areas, but it encapsulates how I feel about it all.

Talking about bad times, what about the kick-off times and all these additional minutes that get added on nowadays?

I'm in Berkshire and have 6 mates that have ST's. They're always complaining about the lack of Sat 3pm games. Then you have the public transport restrictions meaning they can't even stay until the end of a weekday game without piling on taxi expenses at this end. Add on the Thurs / Sun EL thing and it's quite disruptive.

I guess the tourists stay in London and when the ST holder can't deal with another mission to get to and from the game, they'll happily buy the tickets.

Being an old fart and trapped in the past I really dislike the current scheduling, you knew were you stood with days and times, 3pm Saturday, 7.30 Wednesday, now its anyones guess and makes family arrangements awkward. With games regularly being played on Sunday we only manage to get to 4pm ko at a push as my grandson plays and I miss my Sunday roast lunch and make do with take aways.

A lot of truths in there.

But as Scara would say....that's capitalism doing it's good work . Roll eyes.

Yeah, I didn't ever go the Twitter path so didn't get so influenced. The Sky thing was probably my biggest irritant though. The bias and manipulation.

Put that all to one side though (if you can) and just look at the on-pitch product. For me it has changed so much because of the dark arts and the officiating. I would absolutely start there.

If I had the wherewithal to do so, I would build a new panel of football law experts to watch every game in excruciating detail. Their job would be to define a denominator as the number of decisions a referee should have made in a game based on the pure laws. The numerator would be the ones they got right. The percentage is the score they would get. I would get this thing absolutely viral until the world could see that referees are scoring around 60-70% (guess) in their jobs and remind the world that no football stakeholder has ever given a referee permission to ignore those laws. Once the laws iterate around the model and the behaviours of the managers, players and referees would change. A few games finishing 9 players versus 8 players would soon get managers completely changing mindsets about what they implement into their players.

Football needs nudging back to the original spirit of the game, and the rules needs challenging and simplifying. Won't happen under this current governance. It's not even on the agenda.

Yeh that aside

The products just not as good for me, honestly I don't look at half a dozen players and think they are that great, I don't even think someone like Bellingham over time looks the player he is made out to be, although very very good.

I went to watch Lazio alot with my dad in the mid to late 90s following Gazza fanfare and that league had an abundance of talent beyond anything I had ever seen anywhere, you could watch a Sampdoria for example, where honestly 7 of their side would get into the top side in this league now and there were maybe over half a dozen with similar players who would do the same. There just isn't the technicality on the ball which I love and was bought up on anymore, its Usain Bolt with some ability (being extreme for sake of it) in a game that is over policed and coached

The dark arts are not so much the bother for me, I think we actually over police the game where maybe the dark arts win out because of it, I think the game like anything had once an organic flow to it, its a very simple game at its core, the whole search for the absolute truth has killed it, weirdly because its an impossible task to do. So now they change the rules to suit VAR, for example, and the whole sports confused on whats what.

Like I say everyone seemingly gets an influence and opinion in at the top level of the game now and we at the bottom are worse off for it

Yeah, for me VAR is a video ref whose pure job with his/her team should be to improve the performance of the on pitch referee but only based on the laws. Ideally, they do nothing if everything is working pitch side. It should not be constrained to a few things like offside. If 22 players go up for a goal kick vs corner all declaring that their team didn't touch it last, then the video ref should have a quick look, just speak in the in-ear monitor which informs the ref to make the correct decision. If the video ref thinks a player is trying to have the ref on, then he should get him to book him for unsporting behaviour. Let's see how long it is before players start showing some honesty again.

So to get to where you want it, I'd have to take it through this tough journey before we can pull back the policing. There would always be a threat that the moment the players (and managers) started playing their silly games again then the riot police (VAR) would be out in force again.

I used to play football on Sunday morning when a few of our guys went out to Serie A. Channel 4 on a Sunday afternoon I'd be glued to the TV watching those games that were amazing. Have to say though, those Italians were the earliest adopters of the dark arts. They have a lot to answer for.

I don't want the game to be anywhere for me, whats gone is gone, I am explaining where I am with it. Those that wanted those changes can have it

Despite my rant in its fullest, I am not stamping my feet just explaining where I am personally on my journey.

Too many people with disingenuous intentions around the game, they can keep it

I’ve had many a Sunday roast lunch cooked and left for me to warm up in either oven or microwave, depending on how lazy I am feeling when I get home, so I still get my Sunday roast, I just have to eat it on my own.
But that aside, yes I agree that the constant shifting of dates and kick off times makes
It very difficult to plan if you have family or other commitments. There are fan groups pushing back against this but it’s King Canute unless the clubs push back as well - which of course they can’t/won’t because the TV tail wags the dog.

Couldn't agree more, but why do you even know who these people are? Why do you set foot in the cesspit of social media? Put it all on ignore for your own sake. These people can't breathe without air.

Yeh look I agree, I get sent alot from mates and see stuff circling, its not just them three its a ton of people who are clearly being disingenuous in their actions toward the club to feather their own nests.

Some of the people are now on mainstream media for their extreme views about the club, people are riding on the clubs coattails of whats been built in the last 20 years and making money from it, whilst seemingly trying to tear it down.

That's a good post.

Just for info - O'Keefe's source for ITK/Info was David Pleat, when he was removed POK lost his info - hence why he's been very anti Levy/ENIC/Club since and just reposts rumours or is very vague.

Levy isn’t a cancer. He’s just useless.

The amount of money he has wasted is just incredible. In any other business he’s gone 16 years ago. But we are hostages to his fortune.

Having headroom in our wages must make Jan windows like this last one so much easier.

It gives us agility. We can loan players with a view to signing them in the summer when we get cash, and pay extra wages in the interim with no problem. Probably something other sides like the goons can’t so easily do.
