He isn't that young. He is 21. Considering how poor England are on the left, I'd expect him to be playing for England by now at that age if he was of the quality required for a top six team.

Well he's going to find it hard to get ahead of Bale in our team, which means he ain't going to get picked for England.

Back up players can and do get picked for England. Townsend will never be good enough for an England team that is currently quite average. IMO that means he'll never be good enough to be a regular in a top six team. And if we seriously want to start challenging for the League then our back up players need to be good enough to be regulars in a top six side.

Maybe backup players for United and Arsenal, not very often from Spurs.

To be honest, I don't rate Townsend as highly as you think I do, I was just pointing out that he's had a few (not many) standout peformances and Dos Santos hasn't.

But even when he has played, he's not really impressed too often, he ain't impressed me anyway. Even Andros Townsend has had a few decent games and been a standout player in the rare times he's played for us.

Perhaps he doesn't go out on the tinkle and turn up late for training for Mexico like he does at Spurs.

The kid got rat arsed at the Xmas party ( when he was 19) and Redknapp branded him a boozer. What has always struck me as strange is that Keane and Rijkard ( who both had him on loan) said he never missed a training session, and was always first on and last off the pitch in training.

Crouch was tinkled up at the xmas party too and pished his jeans. Rent-a gob didnt have anything to say about that cause 'Crouchy' is/was an old boy fav.

Indeed, and our legend of a captain has done the same but he was not branded a tinkle head either.

But did Harry actually say anything about Gio being tinkled at the Xmas party? There was once a comment about him not being able to pass a night club, but I don't remember him being singled out after the Xmas party. I don't remember Rijkard or Keane saying he was first on and last off the training pitch either. Maybe some quotes will prove me wrong, but I get the impression history is being retold to suite agendas.

I really hope Gio gets to play under AVB.

The quote was something like 'if he could pass a nightclub as well as he could pass a ball he would be a top player'.

maybe harry shouldn't have been so condescending and more encouraging.
GDS has proven that he delivers consistently.
maybe our system didn't suit him that well, but surely he has to recognized as a talent.

Yes, it was a variant on Tommy Docherty's comment about George Best: "George was a fantastic player and he would have been even better if he'd been able to pass nightclubs the way he passed the ball." A comparison with Best could be considered qualified praise.

Can you give me examples in a Spurs shirt where GDS was outstanding? In a competitive game? I can't.

To be honest I can not remember him playing that much at all. I could not really name too many league games in the past two seasons when he has started???

I would love to see the guy given a real chance and run in the side but unfortunately that looks highly unlikely to ever happen which is a shame

Some of the comments in here are absolutely ridiculous.

Lets give him a chance ? 4 years at the club and he hasnt had a chance ? If he was any good he would have got more playing time. I know, lets give every body at the club "a chance", hold on lets go one better... anyone on this forum want "a chance" ? Its not like results matter or anything. Lets lose a few games, but as long as average/poor players get a chance it will be worth it wont it ?

You have to earn playing time, obviously in training and on the pitch he hasnt done enough. I dont know why there is a debate, we've all seen him do nothing to earn more time. Lets forget the fact he was at Barcelona, thats the only thing I can think of that make people seem to rate him. Start thinking about the player he actually is (lightweight, loses the ball, doesnt pick out a pass, dribbles into dead ends), rather than the player you hoped for (ie that skill-full/close control/super-dribbler/creative attacking goal scorer).

Also the international thing... yes he has had some decent games for Mexico, that sometimes happens for countries like that. Think of Healy for Northern Ireland, has 35 international goals all from playing in lower division football.

As for the teams he has gone on loan to, they dont seem to want him now ? There really is no debate, for Spurs he is obviously not good enough. He might do well for a 2nd tier team in a less physical country, maybe top level if he plays in America or south america, but I think it has become fairly obvious GDS will not be a top footballer. That is why Barca cashed in while he was still a teenager.

I'm thinking of players who have done a better job for us and still been sold, not often I find someone who makes Etherington look like a good Spurs player.

Looking forward to seeing him today for Mexico

If Mexico go out today, any chance he'll be back with the team before Saudi Sportswashing Machine or at a stretch Valencia?

I presume there will be a bronze final. They're really picky about placings in the Olympics.
