Dominic Solanke

If you look at the goals Johnson is scoring they are all pretty much the same goal. Usually Son gets a bit of space on the left hand side of the opposition box and plays a low cross along the box, Johnson run ing in front the side taps it in. Its quite a specific type of goal and one that's possible because Solanke will make the first post run that draws the defenders to him leaving space for Johnson to latch on to the pass. If Solanke attempted to wait for that pass it would instead get blocked by the defenders who are shadowing him.

Think of it another way, how often does Solanke receive a pass in the box? In space? Or to run on to? They happen so rarely you can problem remember the majority of them. I don't think he's great by any means and I do think he can be improved upon, I just don't think a better striker is the actual solution to the problem. Kane just scored at a ridiculous clip of you lok at his accuracy and xG figures, even if Solanke were taking as many shots as him he wouldn't score half as many because he's not as good a finisher as Kane, I mean pretty much no one is.

Look at the wings they create nothing other than that one transitional counter with the low cross from Son to Johnson. That's it, other that neither side presents anything to the striker.
Solanke only gets a pass in the area when we’re banging it long and panicking
Our issue for Solanke js the passing through the middle. We don’t do it

Sure, I'm not passionate enough on the subject to debate this to be honest - I will accept that being the reason. I do think we haven't created enough chances for him, but at the things a good goalscorer does to get a lot of their goals he could be better at.....

The way we play
For whatever reason
You have to think of Solanke as the punchbag
The player who gets kicked and prodded but is there to keep the CBs occupied
So many times we have seen, when others have tried to play CF, how easy it is for opposition CBs to stride out and step up
They don’t do that when he plays because he keeps them “honest” (to use a cliche)

Yes, he works his socks off and it helps, or at least it should if we had a coach that was more capable of creating chances for his forwards not just based on everyone running together into the penalty area willy nilly
